Ted Lasso Is Back: What to Expect From Season 4

Ted Lasso returns to Apple TV+ for a fourth season on August 5, 2026, after three years away. The season has 10 episodes. The first one comes out on August 5, and new episodes follow every Wednesday. Season 4 is what the industry calls a "soft reboot." That means it keeps the main characters people already love but brings in a mostly new cast and a new team to follow. At the end of season 3, Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins were planning to start a women's soccer club. That club is the focus of the new season. Ted (played by Jason Sudeikis) has gone back to Kansas City and is working part-time at a grocery store so he can spend more time with his son. The first episode opens in Kansas City, with Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins traveling there to ask Ted to coach the new women's team. Ted's decision to say yes takes up the whole first episode before the show moves back to England. The Verge Apple says the team is a women's second-division club based in Richmond. Apple TV+

Many familiar faces are gone. Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh), and Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández) only get brief mentions this season. The team Ted coaches is made up entirely of new characters. On the coaching staff, Tanya Reynolds joins as Alice, a new assistant coach who is stern and serious, the opposite of Ted's usual optimism. Apple put a lot of effort into promoting the return. A trailer came out on July 28, 2026, along with news of a world premiere event. That deal lets people subscribe to Apple TV+ and Peacock together in one package, which includes Ted Lasso. Apple Newsroom

The way season 4 is put together tells us something about how streaming platforms handle popular shows. By keeping the Rebecca-Keeley-Higgins-Ted core while replacing almost everyone else, Apple and the show's creators are betting that what matters most is the central relationships and the show's tone, not the specific players from the earlier seasons. Moving to a women's second-division team also gives the writers a fresh start, freeing them from the storylines of the Premier League arc while keeping Richmond as the familiar backdrop.

Starting the season in Kansas City and spending a full episode on Ted's recruitment mirrors the first season's premiere, which also delayed Ted's arrival at Richmond. Whether this soft-reboot approach keeps viewers attached to a mostly new cast is the key question the five review episodes were meant to help answer.

In my view, the reboot strategy is a sensible one. Streaming platforms have often struggled to keep successful shows going past their natural ending points, either by forcing stories that feel contrived or by launching spinoffs that lose what made the original special. Ted Lasso's approach keeps the emotional core while rebuilding everything else around it, which at least avoids the worst of those pitfalls. The Kansas City premiere, with its deliberate echo of the show's origin story, suggests the writers know the risk and are addressing it head-on. Whether they pull it off across all ten episodes is something viewers will start to judge on August 5.
