Can a Machine Tell If a Song Was Made by AI? Treblo Just Released a Tool That Tries

Treblo, a company that makes AI-generated music, released a free tool on August 3, 2026, that can detect whether a song was made using Treblo's own system (Treblo Blog). The company published the tool's code online so anyone can check how it works. Treblo says the tool rarely makes mistakes, claiming it falsely flags fewer than one human-made song in 10,000. The Verge, reporting two days later, gave a different number: fewer than one in 1,000 (The Verge).
There is an important catch. The tool only detects music made by Treblo. A song created by a different AI program would not be flagged. Treblo's code is available on a public GitHub page (GitHub).
The tool arrived in the middle of a heated debate. Fenix Flexin, a rapper from Los Angeles, released a song called "Rubberz" that people quickly suspected was made by AI (Pitchfork). Wired reported that hip-hop fans had been arguing about it, with some saying they had proof (Wired). Futurism reported that a producer publicly called the song AI-generated, and Fenix Flexin denied it (Futurism).
Treblo's tool gave its own answer. When tested on "Rubberz," it classified the track as "very likely Treblo" with "high confidence" (The Verge). Treblo CEO Ryan Tremblay told The Verge that the tool returned a very high probability score, suggesting the song was generated almost entirely by Treblo's system. If that is true, "Rubberz" would be the first known AI-generated song to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart (The Verge).
Fenix Flexin denied using AI and posted videos showing what he says are the recording files for the song (The Verge). A producer named Medasin argued that Fenix Flexin may have used an AI tool that splits a finished song into separate parts to make those recording files look real (The Verge; Stereogum). Fenix Flexin did not respond to a request for comment from The Verge (The Verge).
The gap between the two false positive numbers is worth noting. Treblo's blog, published August 3, says fewer than one in 10,000 songs would be wrongly flagged. The Verge's number, one in 1,000, is ten times higher. It is not clear whether Treblo gave The Verge an updated figure or whether The Verge used a more cautious estimate. For a tool being used to question a charting musician's work, that difference matters.
There is also a built-in limitation. Treblo can detect its own music because it knows its own system inside and out. But the tool says nothing about AI music from other companies. If the tool says a song is not Treblo-made, that does not mean it was made by a human. It just means Treblo's system did not make it. This will matter more as more AI music tools appear and as detection starts affecting copyright claims, chart eligibility, and what platforms allow online.
The open-source release does mean independent experts can examine the code, run their own tests, and check whether the false positive numbers hold up. That is a better situation than a closed tool where everyone simply has to trust the company's word.
The "Rubberz" dispute may get resolved, or it may remain unsettled the way these questions often do when the evidence is a probability rather than a clear yes or no. What is clear is that the tools for making these claims are now public, tied to one company's system, and operating in a space where chart positions and reputations are on the line.
