Airbnb Is Letting You Search by Talking to AI. Here's What's Changing.

Airbnb is testing a new search feature powered by AI. Instead of using filters and scrolling through lists, users can type a question in plain language and get results back in a visual format. CEO Brian Chesky announced the test on August 6, 2026, during a call about the company's second-quarter earnings. Revenue was up 17% from a year earlier to $3.6 billion, and adjusted EBITDA — a measure of operating profit — was up 21% to $1.3 billion for the quarter ended June 30. (TechCrunch)
The new search works more like chatting with a bot than using a search bar. Chesky said the AI generates conversational titles for results but presents them visually. On individual listing pages, the AI would create personalized highlights in real time. The feature is still being tested, and Airbnb has not said when it will be available to everyone. (TechCrunch)
AI is also speeding up how fast Airbnb builds things. Chesky told analysts that AI has cut the time from idea to launch by as much as 60%. The company shipped nearly 80% more features and improvements than it did in the same six months a year ago. Airbnb also said AI now writes 60% of its new code, a number first reported in May 2026 and repeated on the Q2 call. (TechCrunch)
That faster pace feeds into the company's 2026 Summer Release, an app update announced in May that added AI tools to help users find places to stay, plan trips, and get help. (Airbnb Newsroom) Airbnb is also adding AI tools for hosts, including help with creating listings and understanding pricing and earnings. (Airbnb Q2 2026 Financial Results)
For customer support, Airbnb launched an AI bot in North America in 2025 and expanded it to more than 50 languages in 2026. The company plans to bring it to voice calls later in the year. About 45% of issues that start with the AI bot get solved without a human ever stepping in. The cost of support per booking dropped 16% from a year earlier, partly because of the AI agent. (TechCrunch)
Airbnb has been using AI for other purposes too, including fraud prevention and making the platform easier to use — areas it has invested in for years. (Airbnb Newsroom, 2018) The company's Help Center has a guide explaining how it uses AI and how users can control their data. (Airbnb Help Center)
These results come alongside other recent changes. In April 2025, Airbnb made total price display — showing all fees upfront — standard everywhere in search results, two years after first offering it as an option. (Airbnb Newsroom) In October 2025, the company added social features for Airbnb Experiences, along with smarter search and expanded AI customer support. (Airbnb Newsroom)
What stands out about these numbers is what they say about Airbnb's position versus competitors. If a 60% faster launch cycle and 80% more shipped features hold up, rivals trying to keep pace with human teams alone will fall behind. The 45% of support issues solved without a human, paired with a 16% cost drop, shows what AI can actually deliver in practice, not just in theory. And switching from keyword search to conversational, personalized results is the same shift that other travel and shopping platforms are testing right now.
The unanswered question is whether users will trust it. If the AI generates personalized highlights for each person, two people looking at the same property could see different descriptions. That could affect what hosts and guests expect from each other — and it is something Airbnb will need to handle carefully if this feature goes from testing to a full rollout.
