Google and Samsung both unveiled their flagship foldables today at competing events on August 12, 2026, and for the first time the two devices share nearly identical screen dimensions, setting up a direct comparison that comes down to silicon, cameras, and build philosophy. The Verge published a full comparison table covering both devices alongside their standard-tier siblings, and the spec sheet tells a detailed story.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is powered by Google's Tensor G6 custom chipset, which Google states is built for advanced AI and delivers up to 50% more computing power. It runs Android 17 with 16GB of RAM and comes in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage tiers. The external display is a 6.5-inch OLED panel; the internal screen is an 8-inch OLED. Both run a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and Android Central reports peak brightness of 3600 nits on both displays. The device weighs 239 grams and measures 155.2 x 76 x 10.1 mm folded, opening to 155.2 x 150.4 x 5 mm unfolded. Google's blog describes it as the company's latest foldable with a thinner and lighter design, a brand-new main camera, and added durability inside and out. The marketing language calls it "thinner, lighter, and 3x stronger."

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, by comparison, runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and also ships with Android 17. RAM comes in 12GB or 16GB configurations, with the 16GB tier reserved for the 1TB model. The Ultra matches Google on display footprint exactly: a 6.5-inch OLED external screen and an 8-inch OLED internal screen. It weighs 215 grams, 24 grams lighter than the Pixel. Samsung's product page notes the Ultra measures just 4.1mm thick unfolded. It uses Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the external screen and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 internally, while the Pixel employs what Google calls "Ultra-durable ceramic cover glass" externally and "Ultra Thin Glass" on the internal panel.

The camera systems diverge sharply. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries a 48-megapixel main sensor at f/1.7 (85-degree FOV), a 10.5-megapixel ultrawide at f/2.2 (127-degree FOV), and a 10.8-megapixel 5x telephoto at f/3.1 (23-degree FOV). The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra goes substantially higher on resolution: a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10-megapixel telephoto. Google has historically leaned on computational photography to close megapixel gaps, and the Tensor G6's stated AI focus aligns with that approach. Whether the G6's "up to 50% more computing power" translates into a measurable shutter-to-processing advantage against Qualcomm's latest silicon will be a question for hands-on testing.

Durability and charging also split along predictable lines. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries an IP68 rating, the more robust standard for water and dust ingress. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is rated IP48. Wireless charging favors Google at 25W versus Samsung's 20W, though the Ultra supports USB-C 3.2 wired charging up to 45W. Both devices support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and 5G across mmWave and Sub-6GHz bands. The Fold 8 Ultra adds UWB, which the Pixel omits.

The standard-tier Galaxy Z Fold 8, also covered in The Verge's comparison, provides additional context for Samsung's lineup positioning. It carries a 7.6-inch OLED internal screen (Samsung's newsroom specifies QXGA+ at 1,848 x 2,448, 403ppi), a 5.5-inch cover display, a 50-megapixel main and 50-megapixel ultrawide dual-camera array, and weighs 201 grams. It runs the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. PhoneArena's comparison notes the Fold 8 has a dual rear camera while the Pixel 11 Pro Fold has a triple setup. The previous-generation Pixel 10 Pro Fold, also in The Verge's table, used the Tensor G5, ran Android 16, weighed 258 grams, and had a 48-megapixel main camera, which means the 11 Pro Fold sheds 19 grams year over year while moving to a new SoC generation and OS version.

Connectivity parity between the two flagships is worth noting. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and full 5G support on both devices means the networking differentiator this cycle is narrow, limited to Samsung's UWB inclusion. For enterprise deployment scenarios where UWB matters, that could be a practical deciding factor.

Google's Made by Google 2026 event framed the Pixel 11 Pro Fold as having enhanced intelligence tools alongside the hardware changes. Samsung's foldable launch similarly emphasized Galaxy AI integration. Both companies are now positioning their foldables not just as hardware showcases but as delivery vehicles for on-device AI, and both have chosen Android 17 as the platform layer for that push.

The foldable category has spent years iterating toward mainstream viability, and these two devices represent the closest the market has come to spec-sheet convergence between its two strongest players. Identical screen sizes, the same OS, overlapping connectivity, and prices that will likely land in similar territory mean the purchase decision increasingly hinges on ecosystem preference, camera philosophy, and SoC allegiance rather than the fundamental question of whether a foldable is ready for daily use. That question, at least for this generation, appears to be settled.
