Schlage unveiled the Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt at CES 2025, its first lock to combine ultra wideband (UWB) ranging with Matter-over-Thread connectivity — a pairing that puts the device among the earliest smart locks to ship with UWB at all, according to Schlage's own CES announcement.

UWB in a door lock is not a trivial addition. The technology uses time-of-flight ranging at sub-GHz bandwidths to place a paired device — typically a smartphone — in three-dimensional space with centimeter-level precision, something Bluetooth LE alone cannot reliably do. For access control, that translates to hands-free unlocking that can distinguish whether you are standing on the porch or sitting in your car on the driveway. The distinction matters: proximity-based auto-unlock over Bluetooth has been plagued by relay-attack vulnerabilities and false positives since the feature first appeared in consumer locks. UWB's directional precision is the technical answer to both failure modes.

The second pillar of the announcement is the Matter-over-Thread stack. Matter, the application-layer interoperability protocol backed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, has been the smart-home industry's best attempt at breaking the walled-garden problem that stalled category growth for years. Running it over Thread — a low-power, IPv6-based mesh radio — rather than over Wi-Fi keeps the lock off the home's IP network directly and reduces power consumption, which matters for a battery-operated device. HomeKit News reported that the Sense Pro carries full Matter-over-Thread compatibility, making it Schlage's first product to do so.

Schlage also introduced what it is calling Schlage Converge technology alongside the Sense Pro. The company has not fully unpacked that branding in public documentation, but the framing suggests a unified credential and radio management layer — one that handles UWB, Thread, and potentially legacy Bluetooth channels under a single software abstraction. Worth watching: how that architecture plays out for third-party integrators who need to reason about the lock's state across multiple transport layers simultaneously.

The Sense Pro was announced via PR Newswire on January 6, 2025, alongside a separate product — the Schlage Arrive Smart WiFi Deadbolt — confirming that the company is pursuing two distinct connectivity strategies at the same time. The Arrive targets the broader, Wi-Fi-native segment of the market; the Sense Pro addresses the more technically demanding tier where precision, interoperability, and mesh networking are priorities.

The broader picture here is that UWB is following a familiar integration curve. It appeared first in flagship phones — Apple's U1 chip shipped in 2019, and Android OEMs followed — then moved into asset trackers and automotive passive-entry systems. Consumer locks are the next logical domain, and Schlage arriving here early means its implementation will carry outsized influence on how the category approaches UWB credential management and the associated security model. The Thread + Matter combination only reinforces that: it lets the lock participate in a standards-based home automation fabric rather than depending on a vendor's cloud relay, which has long been the Achilles heel of connected lock reliability.

None of this eliminates the execution variables. UWB's angular accuracy degrades with metal door frames and certain building materials; real-world false-positive and false-negative rates at the product level are not yet established by independent testing. The Converge abstraction is still opaque. And Matter's track record with complex, security-critical device classes is shorter than its track record with lights and thermostats.

Those caveats aside, the specification set Schlage has assembled for the Sense Pro is the most technically complete package the residential lock category has seen in a single product. For practitioners building or specifying smart-home systems, this is a device worth tracking closely as independent testing data begins to surface.
