SanDisk has launched the Optimus GX PRO 850P, an M.2 NVMe SSD officially licensed for the PS5 and PS5 Pro, available in 1TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities with sequential read speeds up to 7,300 MB/s over PCIe 4.0.
The drive slots into the PS5's M.2 expansion bay and ships with a heatsink engineered to the thermal constraints of that specific slot — a detail worth noting given how little headroom Sony left in the PS5 chassis. The official licensing designation means the product has passed Sony's compatibility and performance validation process, not merely that it fits the form factor.
PCIe 4.0 at 7,300 MB/s puts the 850P at the practical ceiling of what the PS5's M.2 interface can currently sustain. Sony's own internal SSD in the base PS5 runs at roughly 5,500 MB/s, so on raw sequential throughput the 850P clears that bar. Whether that translates to a perceptible gameplay difference depends almost entirely on how individual titles manage asset streaming — a variable the drive itself cannot control.
The capacity range is the more commercially interesting dimension. At the low end, 1TB is a modest complement to the PS5's ~667 GB of usable built-in storage. The 4TB and 8TB options are aimed squarely at users who have accumulated large game libraries and resent the routine of deleting and redownloading titles. Modern AAA releases regularly exceed 100 GB installed; eight of them can consume a terabyte without effort. An 8TB expansion drive changes that calculus entirely for heavy users.
The datasheet published June 16, 2026 confirms the heatsink is optimized specifically for both the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro M.2 slot geometry — a single heatsink design that covers both console variants without requiring adapters or modifications.
The broader context here is that the console storage aftermarket has matured considerably since Sony opened the PS5's M.2 slot via firmware in 2021. Early on, buyers were navigating a patchwork of unofficial drives with uneven thermal behavior and no formal compatibility guarantees. An officially licensed product at these capacities, from a brand with decades of flash storage manufacturing history, reflects how that market has normalized. It also reflects the continued pressure on flash pricing — shipping an 8TB M.2 NVMe drive as a consumer product for a gaming console would have been an unusual proposition just a few years ago.
SanDisk has not published pricing or a firm general availability date on the product page reviewed for this article. Those details are worth watching, particularly for the 8TB tier, where the value proposition against external USB storage — lower bandwidth, but simpler installation — will be tested by the price gap.
