Instagram Expands Carousels to 20 Images With Per-Slide Captions

Instagram has updated its carousel format to support up to 20 images per post and introduced the ability to assign a distinct caption to each individual slide, according to an announcement published on the platform on 18 June 2026.

The previous ceiling for carousel posts was 10 images. Doubling that limit meaningfully changes the unit of content a creator or brand can publish in a single post — a photo essay, a step-by-step tutorial, or a multi-chapter product reveal now fits within one shareable URL rather than requiring a thread of separate posts or an off-platform link.

The per-slide caption feature is the more structurally interesting of the two changes. Until now, carousel posts carried a single caption attached to the top-level post object — meaning any annotation specific to a given image had to be embedded in the image itself, threaded into comments, or omitted entirely. Per-slide captions let creators attach discrete text directly to each frame, which opens the format to use cases that previously required workarounds: annotated data visualizations, multilingual content paired slide-by-slide, instructional sequences where each step needs its own explanation. For accessibility tooling and third-party integrations that read post metadata, this also adds a new field to account for.

From a content-strategy standpoint, this nudges the carousel closer to a document or presentation format than a simple photo album. Platforms have quietly been competing on this axis for a while — LinkedIn's native document upload, the PDF-as-carousel workaround that became widespread on that platform, and Pinterest's multi-image pin all address the same underlying creator need: more expressive, denser information per post. Instagram is arriving at a similar destination via its own product lineage.

The practical implications for developers and platform integrators are worth tracking. Any application that ingests carousel metadata via the Instagram Graph API will need to handle the expanded slide count and the new per-slide caption fields — assumptions baked into parsers about a 10-image maximum or a single caption string per post object may now produce silent truncation or schema mismatches. It is worth auditing integrations sooner rather than later, particularly for social media management tools, analytics dashboards, and publishing platforms that write back to Instagram.

There is also an algorithmic dimension, though Instagram has not disclosed any ranking implications alongside this announcement. More text per post — across up to 20 caption fields — gives the recommendation engine considerably more signal about content. Whether that shifts how carousels are surfaced relative to Reels or single-image posts is an open question, and one that creator teams running controlled experiments will likely begin probing quickly.

The update lands at a point when Meta's broader product posture has been to increase time-on-surface by deepening the utility of each format rather than launching new ones. Longer carousels with richer metadata fit that pattern without requiring users to learn a new interaction model — the swipe gesture is already habituated across the platform's audience. For creators who have built workflows around carousels as their primary publishing format, the changes are additive and backward-compatible; existing posts are unaffected.
