In Nepal's Highlands, Climate Change Threatens Tibet's Bon Faith

Lubra Village in Lower Mustang sits at the confluence of two pressures: annual monsoon floods that have always shaped life in the Himalayan rain shadow, and a warming climate accelerating the pace and scale of that destruction. For the 16 families who practice Bon — the ancient animist-shamanist religion of Tibet that predates Buddhism in the region — the stakes are existential in a double sense. Their homes are at risk. So is one of the most geographically isolated living traditions in the world.
A Village in the Path of the Floods
Each monsoon season, Lubra faces flash floods that generate debris flows roughly 150 meters wide, according to Nepali Times. The village has always managed this hazard, but rising temperatures across the Himalayan region have intensified both the frequency and severity of flooding events, per reporting by Engineers for Exploration at UC San Diego. The physical geography offers little buffer: the narrow valleys of Lower Mustang funnel water and debris with force.
The October 2025 floods placed this local reality within a national catastrophe. Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods, landslides, and riverine flooding across central and eastern Nepal, according to Al Jazeera. Contributing factors included monsoon wind patterns, Nepal's steep topography, poor infrastructure, and climate change. Expert analysis subsequently found that climate change made floods of that magnitude 70% more likely.
Bon's Fragile Geography
Bon is not marginal to Nepali religious pluralism — Nepal's National Tourism Board lists it alongside Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism, Sikhism, ancestor worship, and animism as recognized traditions in the country. But Lubra is singular: it is among the last places where Bon is practiced as a living community faith rather than as a monastic or scholarly institution. Sixteen families. One village. One flood season away from irreversible disruption.
The relationship between religious belief and climate adaptation is not incidental. Research published in PMC establishes that faith systems significantly shape how communities perceive, interpret, and respond to climate hazards — influencing whether adaptation is framed as communal obligation, spiritual practice, or both. For Bon practitioners, whose cosmology is rooted in the animate forces of the natural world, the degradation of that world carries theological weight that climate vulnerability assessments rarely capture.
Faith, Policy, and a Gap
Nepal has begun to integrate faith into its environmental governance. In June 2024, the country launched its first Faith Plan for the Environment, mobilizing Buddhist teachings to protect ecosystems and sentient beings. The initiative reflects a broader recognition — reinforced by the WWF and allied organizations — that religious institutions hold community trust and moral authority that secular policy levers often lack.
The gap, however, is visible. Nepal's Faith Plan centers Buddhism, the dominant tradition across the country's highlands. Bon, despite its historical and cultural proximity to Tibetan Buddhism and its geographic overlap with at-risk mountain communities, sits outside the policy frame. For a tradition with no institutional redundancy — no diaspora network, no urban congregation to absorb displaced practitioners — that gap carries weight.
The broader pattern here is one familiar in climate-risk governance: the most vulnerable communities are often also the least institutionally legible. Lubra's Bon practitioners are not represented in the national data architectures that drive adaptation funding. Their losses, if the village is repeatedly flooded and families disperse, would register as population displacement, not cultural extinction.
What Lubra needs is not only flood mitigation infrastructure — though debris-flow barriers and early warning systems are straightforward interventions — but inclusion in Nepal's faith-environment framework before the monsoon seasons compound further. The 2025 floods have already reset the baseline for what "normal" looks like in Nepal's highlands. Whether Bon survives another decade of accelerated hydrological change may depend, in part, on whether it earns a line in a policy document before it earns an obituary.
