Albanese and Trump Do Diplomacy by Selfie, Again

Anthony Albanese and Donald Trump smiled for another selfie on the sidelines of the United Nations in New York on 23 September 2026.
The encounter was brief. The photo is familiar. The two leaders are pictured smiling together, framed by gold panelling in one version of the image circulated in the week leading up to 24 September 2026. Albanese held a doorstop in New York on 23 September 2026. PM Transcripts There he was asked about being in the General Assembly audience for Trump's speech that morning. The transcript records the question. It does not record a set-piece bilateral attached to the day. Albanese also gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Earlier in the month, on 2 September 2026, he held a press conference in Palau.
None of that is accidental scheduling. For the press gallery, UNGA week is working time. Leaders stack pull-asides, receptions and doorstops around the speeches. Photos get taken because access is short.
The history here matters because Canberra remembers the false start. Albanese was due to hold his first meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada in June 2025, but Trump cancelled at the last minute. The Guardian
What followed was selfie diplomacy, first iteration. Albanese posted a selfie with Trump in September 2025 after a brief meeting at the US welcome reception for world leaders attending the United Nations General Assembly. The Instagram post was captioned "Good to chat with President Donald Trump at US welcome reception for world leaders attending United Nations General Assembly hosted by @potus and @flotus". At the time, Albanese announced he would visit the White House the following month. He was seeking to lock in Trump's support for the Aukus nuclear submarine agreement.
That White House visit materialised. Albanese secured his first face-to-face meeting with Trump for October 2025 following the September 2025 General Assembly encounter. Trump was scheduled to meet Albanese in Washington on 20 October 2025, according to a White House official. Reuters At that meeting on 20 October 2025, Trump and Albanese signed a critical minerals agreement aimed at countering China. So the September 2026 image is the third beat in a sequence. Cancelled G7 sit-down. Reception handshake turned into social content. Formal in Washington with paper signed. Now another reception handshake turned into social content.
In my view, that sequence explains why the prime minister's office keeps posting the pictures. A selfie is low cost and high signal. It says access is warm. It gives Australian television a visual. It denies the commentariat a story about distance.
The broader context here is how this White House does business. Formal process counts for less than personal rapport, or at least the appearance of it. Albanese is not a natural Trump-style performer. He does not do effusive. The grin-and-thumb routine is borrowed language. Canberra noticed in 2025. It will notice again now.
Looking at what this means for practitioners, separate the photo from the file. The photo tells you the relationship is functional. It does not tell you where Aukus sits, where the critical minerals work program sits, or what was said in the pull-aside, if anything substantive was said at all. Those answers live in briefings, in implementation, in what ministers do after the leaders smile. Judge the selfie on its own terms. It is maintenance, not outcome.
