Sennheiser Momentum 5 Review: Great Sound, 57-Hour Battery, Few Compromises

Sennheiser's Momentum 5 has passed its most detailed independent test to date. TechCrunch published a review on September 27, 2026 covering sound quality, noise cancellation, comfort and battery life, with a verdict of great sound, excellent battery life and few compromises. TechCrunch

The headphone is priced at $399.99 in the US. It is engineered with HD 600-series DNA and supports Bluetooth 5.4, aptX, Snapdragon Sound, Dolby Atmos, lossless high-res audio, and spatial audio with head-tracking. Sennheiser The Guardian

That wireless stack matters for tech-literate buyers. Bluetooth 5.4 provides the transport, Snapdragon Sound and aptX handle high-throughput codec negotiation on supported handsets, and Dolby Atmos plus head-tracked spatial audio handle object-based and personalized rendering. Lossless high-res remains dependent on source, codec chain and RF conditions, but the inclusion puts the Momentum 5 in the current flagship tier on paper.

Noise cancellation is where Sennheiser made the largest hardware change. The Momentum 5 uses eight microphones for active noise cancellation, double the previous generation. Sennheiser claims the system is up to three times more effective than the previous generation at blocking voices and nearby chatter. Voice pickup in calls and transparency behavior will determine how that array performs outside the lab, but the mic count gives the adaptive algorithms substantially more spatial information to work with.

Battery performance anchors the TechCrunch verdict. The Momentum 5 is rated for up to 57 hours, with Sennheiser's specifications listing that figure with ANC on. A 10-minute charge provides up to seven hours of playback. A full charge takes about two hours. The cell is user-replaceable.

Software is handled through the Smart Control Plus companion app. It offers an 8-band EQ, adjustable ANC level with a dedicated anti-wind mode, and a Sound Personalization feature that builds a tailored profile from a listening test. For an expert user, that combination is practical. Fixed presets rarely survive contact with hearing variation and seal differences, while adjustable ANC and per-ear tuning allow compensation for fit, glasses, hair and commute noise.

The broader context here is consolidation rather than reinvention. The Guardian separately described the sound as fantastic in its July review, which aligns with the September verdict on audio quality. No single specification is novel on its own. Eight-mic ANC, 57-hour endurance, Snapdragon Sound, Dolby Atmos and in-app personalization already exist across the premium segment in various combinations.

In this author's view, the notable part is the packaging. Long endurance plus a replaceable cell addresses the usual failure mode for premium wireless headphones, which is battery degradation rather than driver failure. Worth flagging for IT buyers and long-haul users: 57 hours with ANC on effectively moves charging from a daily task to a weekly one, and fast-charge yield of seven hours from 10 minutes covers a full workday from a short top-up.

What genuinely changes is maintenance overhead. If the acoustic tuning holds up across firmware updates and the ANC improvements translate to crowded offices and voice-heavy environments, the Momentum 5 fits as a low-friction daily driver for professionals who live in calls, editors who need extended listening without fatigue management, and travelers who value fewer cables and chargers.
