BBC Radio 4's Long Wave service will go off air on 27 June 2026, ending a transmission run of nearly 90 years from the Droitwich Kastle Hill site in Worcestershire. The BBC announced the closure in May 2023, and the final switch-off is scheduled for tomorrow — the last act in a drawn-out wind-down that has been both technically and culturally contested.

The Droitwich transmitter has operated on 198 kHz since the 1930s, at various points serving as the principal national broadcast backbone for what was then the BBC Home Service. Long wave's propagation characteristics — ground-wave coverage extending several hundred kilometres, with sky-wave bounce capable of reaching far further at night — made it the engineering choice of its era. Terrestrial FM, DAB, and now IP streaming have progressively displaced those advantages, and the operating costs of maintaining a high-power AM transmitter have become harder to justify against a listener base that has migrated almost entirely to other platforms.

The BBC has confirmed it will decommission the transmitter hardware at Droitwich following the shutdown. What remains are the two large masts themselves, and a campaign has already begun to have them listed as heritage structures. Whether Historic England moves to protect them is a separate process, but the push reflects how visibly the Droitwich installation has embedded itself in the local landscape and in the broader history of British broadcasting.

The audience most affected is a narrow but specific one: mariners and listeners in parts of Europe where FM coverage is patchy or absent, along with a cohort of older listeners who have never moved to DAB. The BBC has pointed to Radio 4's availability on FM (92–95 MHz), DAB, Freeview, Freesat, Sky, and BBC Sounds as the practical alternatives — a reasonable position from a coverage-economics standpoint, though it places the burden of platform migration entirely on the listener.

There is a technical footnote worth raising here. Long wave's 198 kHz carrier is not just a legacy broadcast medium — it has also served, incidentally, as a time-signal reference and a navigational aid across northern Europe. Those functions are largely handled by separate infrastructure (the MSF signal on 60 kHz from Anthorn, for instance), so the Droitwich LW closure does not directly sever those capabilities. But the loss of a high-power, low-frequency transmitter of this scale is not nothing from an RF landscape perspective — fewer such assets exist on the continent with each passing year.

The closure also closes a chapter in the specific engineering culture that built and maintained these installations. High-power MW and LW transmitter sites required specialist RF engineering skills that have become genuinely scarce. The teams who kept Droitwich's valve-era hardware running into the digital age occupied a niche that the industry has not replaced; it has simply rendered it unnecessary.

Whether the masts survive as listed structures or are eventually dismantled, the transmission itself ends tomorrow. Radio 4 continues — on every platform its current listeners actually use. The frequency goes silent. The service does not.
