Visitors who had paid up to £33 to see the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum in London were turned away early on Wednesday 30 September. The museum closed at 15.30 for an evening event. Those affected are being offered a refund and a free rebooking.

The shutdown hit one of the most in-demand shows in the city. Public tickets for the Tapestry went on sale on 1 July 2026. Tickets for 10 September to 31 December 2026 have sold out, the museum said, with further releases promised for later in the run.

The museum has apologised to visitors caught out by the early closure. It described what happened as an isolated situation. The Telegraph reported that Tapestry visitors were turned away for a Chancellor's dinner, and that those affected could claim a refund and reschedule without paying again.

A notice on the museum's website had warned of the 15.30 closure on 30 September for a museum event. Separately, Samsung Electronics said it hosted a gala at the museum that night, in partnership with the museum, to mark the opening of its Korea exhibition. Samsung Newsroom

The Tapestry show runs from 10 September 2026 to 11 July 2027. The 70-metre-long embroidery tells the story of the 1066 Norman invasion and the Battle of Hastings. It is housed in a custom-built case made for the London display after condition checks before installation.

Demand has been intense. King Charles and France's President Emmanuel Macron viewed the work at the museum, according to Reuters. The museum has banned visitors from taking photographs of the Tapestry, a rule reported by the BBC. Tickets for the show cost up to £33.

There is another way to see the story outside London. In June 2026 the museum launched its Bayeux Around Britain programme with more than 60 partners. Hand-painted plaster casts taken directly from the Tapestry will tour venues around the United Kingdom.

For fans, this means a missed visit is not the end of the story. A refund plus a free return offers a second chance if you can get a new date. It still stings if you travelled far.
