Rangitīkei District councillor Coral Raukawa has been selected as the National Party's candidate for the Māori electorate of Te Tai Hauāuru, according to RNZ and Scoop.

Raukawa sits on the Rangitīkei District Council as a Māori ward councillor. She was born and raised in Marton, which sits within the electorate's boundaries. Her whakapapa includes Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa and Ngāti Tamakopiri.

Te Tai Hauāuru is one of the seven dedicated Māori electorates, returning a single MP to the House of Representatives. It covers much of the lower North Island west coast and has been held by Te Pāti Māori's Debbie Ngarewa-Packer since 2020, when she unseated Labour's Adrian Rurawhe. National has not held the seat in the MMP era.

The selection places Raukawa in the race ahead of the 2026 general election. Running in a Māori electorate as a National candidate is structurally difficult — Te Tai Hauāuru has not returned a National MP under MMP, and the party's support among Māori electorate voters has historically been thin. But National has been contesting all Māori electorates with increasing consistency in recent cycles, and local government experience in a ward that overlaps the electorate gives Raukawa a visible base to work from.

Her iwi connections and upbringing in Marton give her a credible claim to the rohe. Whether that translates into a campaign capable of challenging the incumbent is a separate question — one that will turn on candidate profile, party resources, and how the broader political environment looks by election day.
