Coventry Cathedral's Hutton Glass Damaged Again — This Time During Event Setup

A panel of Coventry Cathedral's celebrated West Screen has sustained damage during preparations for a music event, according to a report published on 1 July 2026 by The Guardian. The injury to John Hutton's hand-engraved glass adds a fresh chapter to what has become an uncomfortably eventful recent history for one of Britain's most architecturally significant post-war interiors.
Hutton's West Screen — a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass at the cathedral's entrance — took a decade to complete and incorporates 66 engraved figures of saints and angels. The work is technically extraordinary: Hutton used a wheel-engraving method on glass that had already been set in position, producing figures of exceptional depth and translucency. The screen is not decorative trim. It is structurally and symbolically load-bearing to the building's identity, separating the new Basil Spence-designed cathedral from the ruins of the medieval St Michael's that was bombed in November 1940.
This is not the first time the screen has required emergency conservation attention. In January 2020, a panel depicting 'The Angel of the Eternal Gospel' was deliberately attacked and shattered beyond repair, prompting the cathedral to bring in specialist conservators from Recclesia Stained Glass to undertake conservation and repair work on the damaged section. That restoration effort was still being documented as recently as July 2023. In the interim, the cathedral ran an open call for artists to propose temporary works to occupy the void left by the destroyed panel — an initiative covered by the BBC in April 2022 — framing the gap itself as an opportunity for community engagement rather than simply an absence.
The cathedral's response to that earlier act of vandalism drew on Coventry's established identity as a site of reconciliation: the institution has built significant programming around transforming episodes of destruction into gestures of connection. Whether the same framework will be applied to this latest incident is not yet clear.
What the two events share is vulnerability. The West Screen, for all its canonical status, sits in an actively used public building. Coventry Cathedral hosts concerts, community events, and large-scale installations throughout the year. The logistics of staging such events in close proximity to irreplaceable mid-century glass — Hutton died in 1978 and no equivalent practitioner of his specific wheel-engraving technique at architectural scale is working today — carries inherent risk that venue managers and conservators will now be weighing carefully.
Recclesia Stained Glass's prior involvement gives the cathedral a working relationship with conservators who already have hands-on knowledge of Hutton's glass. That continuity matters: conservation of engraved glass, unlike leaded stained glass, involves working with the surface integrity of the material itself rather than replacing discrete lead-joined pieces. Damage assessment and any remediation will require determining whether the engraved surface is compromised, whether structural integrity of the panel is affected, and what, if any, in-painting or stabilisation is feasible.
The fuller picture of the current damage — its precise location on the screen, its extent, and whether it is repairable — has not yet been confirmed by the cathedral. What is established is the pattern: a fragile, unrepeatable artwork in a high-traffic setting, now damaged twice within six years under very different circumstances.
For heritage conservators and ecclesiastical property managers, the operational question this raises is straightforward: what separation protocols and physical safeguarding are appropriate when temporary event infrastructure is installed near fixed heritage glass? The answer will carry implications beyond Coventry, given the number of listed and scheduled buildings in the UK that routinely host commercial and cultural events to fund their own upkeep — a structural tension that has no clean resolution.
