September CPI Looms at 3.6% as Real Yields Squeeze Markets Into FOMC

September Consumer Price Index is scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, with consensus looking for a reacceleration. Economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal expected a 0.6% monthly gain, up from 0.4% in August, for a 12-month reading of 3.6%. Wall Street Journal The release timing is listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Trading desks were positioned for the same annual outcome. Traders expected September headline CPI to rise 3.6% from a year earlier, versus 3.4% in August, according to CNBC. That is an acceleration on both the monthly and annual measures.

Positioning into the print was defensive in hard assets and rates. Comex gold settled 0.31% lower at $4152.90 ahead of the U.S. CPI data, while Comex silver settled 1.63% lower at $59.161. Wall Street Journal The moves left precious metals lower into the data rather than bid for an inflation surprise.

The data sequence is compressed. September CPI was scheduled for release on Wednesday during the week of Oct. 12-16, 2026, with retail sales and PPI scheduled for release a day after September CPI. Investing.com The October 2026 CPI is scheduled for release on November 10, 2026, at 08:30 AM.

The rates backdrop tightened into the release window. Wall Street closed lower on October 7, 2026 as long-dated U.S. Treasury yields resumed their climb. Reuters That followed a session in early September when Treasury yields hit their highest level since 2023 and the S&P 500 fell 0.58% as climbing yields made stocks less attractive. The S&P 500 remained up 11% in 2026 at the time of that decline. Reuters

July provided the most recent template for a CPI-day reaction. U.S. stocks finished mixed and government bond yields edged lower after July inflation data showed consumer prices increased 3.4%. Wall Street Journal For the intermeeting period around the July 29, 2026 FOMC meeting, the Federal Reserve's minutes state that Treasury yields rose 25 to 30 basis points, driven by increases in real interest rates. The policy calendar turns quickly after the data. The FOMC held a meeting on September 15-16, 2026, and the Federal Reserve released the minutes of that meeting on October 7, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. EDT. FOMC minutes state the next Committee meeting after September 2026 would be held Tuesday-Wednesday, October 27-28, 2026. Federal Reserve The Federal Reserve has also scheduled the December 2026 FOMC meeting for December 8-9, 2026. Federal Reserve BofA Global Research expected three 0.25-percentage-point rate increases in 2026, starting in September. BofA Private Bank

The broader context here is the composition of the yield move. A nominal selloff led by real rates, rather than breakevens, tightens financial conditions through duration and equity risk premia without signaling a loss of inflation anchoring. That distinction matters for the October 27-28 meeting. A 0.6% monthly CPI alongside 3.6% year over year keeps sequential momentum elevated into PPI and retail sales the next day, giving the Committee coincident signals on price pressure and demand resilience.

In my view, the market structure into October 14 favors a rates-led transmission. The September episode showed equities can absorb higher yields while holding a double-digit year-to-date gain, but with sensitivity at the long end. Gold and silver fading ahead of the print suggests limited pre-hedging for an upside surprise and more focus on the real-rate path. If September confirms the surveyed acceleration, the debate shifts from whether disinflation stalled to how the FOMC calibrates the October statement and December guidance with three meetings left in the year-end sequence.
