A 22-year-old woman died following a skydiving incident near Langar airfield, Nottinghamshire, on Sunday, 5 July 2026. Emergency services were called at 12:13 PM, and the woman was found in a field adjacent to the airfield and pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the fatality in a statement published at 19:45 that evening; DI Rachel Mayfield is leading the police response.

Nottinghamshire Police and Fire and Rescue Service both attended. Police are compiling a file for the Nottinghamshire coroner, who will open and adjourn an inquest in the usual course. The woman's family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.

Skydive Langar, the centre operating at the site, described the deceased as an experienced skydiver. The organisation logs more than 50,000 jumps annually across a fleet of three turbine aircraft — two Cessna Grand Caravans and one standard Caravan — making it the busiest civilian drop zone in the UK. The airfield itself has a long operational history: originally opened in 1942 as a wartime base for RAF 207 Squadron, it transitioned to civilian use, with Skydive Langar establishing on the site in 1977.

The cause of the incident has not been confirmed publicly. At that jump volume, any fatality triggers mandatory engagement with British Skydiving, the national governing body for the sport in the UK. British Skydiving had already issued Safety Notice Bulletin SN-01/26 earlier in 2026 following a separate fatality at one of its Affiliated Parachute Training Organisations, signalling that safety scrutiny across the affiliated network was already elevated before this incident. Whether that bulletin is connected to Langar has not been confirmed.

Fatalities at high-volume drop zones attract particular regulatory attention because the statistical exposure is greater — 50,000 annual jumps is an order of magnitude above most UK civilian centres. British Skydiving's affiliated PTOs operate under a framework of mandated equipment checks, currency requirements, and incident reporting; a coroner's inquest will establish the factual record and may result in a Prevention of Future Deaths report if systemic issues are identified. Until the investigation concludes, the cause — whether equipment failure, canopy malfunction, medical event, or human factors — remains formally undetermined.

The investigation is in its earliest stage. What is established is the loss of a young experienced skydiver, a police inquiry underway, and a coroner's process that will eventually deliver a public account of what happened.
