Forterra has disclosed that more than 100 of its self-driving Lancer vehicles have been operating in combat zones in Ukraine for the past nine months, in what the company describes as the largest deployment of autonomous ground vehicles in combat by any US defense tech company TechCrunch.

The vehicles arrived in Ukraine in October 2025 under a mission funded by US defense dollars. Since then they have logged more than 2,500 miles across over 1,100 missions, carried a cumulative 777,440 pounds of materiel, and performed 52 casualty evacuations, according to figures Forterra provided to TechCrunch. Scott Sanders, Forterra's chief growth officer and a former US Marine officer, spoke directly to the outlet about the program.

The Lancer is built on a Polaris ATV chassis fitted with a custom sensor and compute stack. It is gas-powered rather than battery-electric and rated to carry 750 kilograms of cargo — a payload figure that sits well above the roughly 250 kilograms typical of Ukraine's own domestically produced uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs), which are generally battery-powered, according to an anonymous Ukrainian soldier cited in the report.

Despite the autonomy branding, most of the actual battlefield use has been teleoperated rather than fully autonomous. TechCrunch reports two reasons for this: the vehicles are considered too valuable to risk losing to an autonomy failure, and the underlying autonomous driving stack is not yet judged ready for the unpredictability of active combat conditions. That distinction matters for anyone tracking the gap between marketed autonomy levels and fielded reality — a gap that has dogged autonomous vehicle programs in commercial contexts for a decade and is now surfacing in a much higher-stakes environment.

Sergeant Major Corey Wilkens, who leads a US Army program developing autonomous vehicle tactics, was also quoted in the piece, indicating the Pentagon's own doctrine work is tracking the Ukraine deployment closely rather than treating it as a purely contractor-driven experiment.

Funding and the broader contracting picture

Forterra has raised more than $500 million in venture funding, with investors including XYZ Venture Capital and Moore Strategic Partners TechCrunch. That capital base sits alongside a separate line of institutional defense contracts the company has been accumulating through the first half of 2026. On June 1, Forterra and prime contractor Oshkosh Defense secured a US Marine Corps ROGUE-Fires Block 2 Production Award. On May 25, the pair received a $92 million order tied to ROGUE-Fires. Forterra introduced a new MESA Vehicle on April 28, described as extending mission capability to what the company calls the last tactical mile, and the company was named to the 2026 NatSec 100 Companies list on May 11 Forterra newsroom.

Notably, none of those newsroom posts mention the Ukraine deployment itself. As of this writing, Forterra's own press materials are silent on the program TechCrunch just reported — the Ukraine story emerged entirely from direct interviews rather than company disclosure, which is worth flagging for anyone assessing how defense contractors choose to control the narrative around combat use of their hardware versus domestic procurement wins.

Ukraine's own UGV buildout

The Forterra deployment is a small fraction of a much larger Ukrainian push toward ground robotics. Ukraine plans to contract 25,000 unmanned ground vehicles in the first half of 2026 alone, more than double the country's 2025 total, according to Defense News. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has publicly stated the same target of 25,000 ground robots by early 2026. Against that backdrop, Forterra's 100-plus vehicles represent a narrow but symbolically important American contribution — the first sustained combat data set for a US-built autonomous ground platform, even if the vast majority of the fleet on the ground remains Ukrainian-made.

The contrast in specifications is instructive. Ukraine's domestic UGVs favor lighter, battery-powered platforms optimized for rapid, distributed production and lower per-unit cost. Forterra's gas-powered Lancer trades that scalability for higher payload capacity and, presumably, longer range between refueling — a design choice that reflects its origins as a US defense platform rather than a wartime improvisation.

What the Ukraine data actually validates, at this stage, is teleoperated logistics and casualty evacuation under fire rather than autonomous maneuver in contact. That's a meaningful distinction for procurement officers and program managers evaluating vendor claims industry-wide: driving 2,500 miles across 1,100 missions is a real operational record, but it is a record of remote-piloted reliability, not of an autonomy stack surviving contested electronic warfare and GPS-denied conditions unassisted. Closing that gap is likely to be the next milestone Forterra, the Army, and Ukrainian units are all watching for, and it is one that will shape how quickly autonomous ground systems move from casualty evacuation and resupply toward more contested roles.
