Connecting a new LG UltraGear monitor to a Windows 11 PC triggers Windows Update to silently install LG driver updates and the LG Monitor App Installer, with no permission pop-up or notification, according to testing by Gamers Nexus (The Verge). The installer does not provide monitor-specific controls. Instead, it points users toward LG's own applications and McAfee antivirus.

The mechanism behind this behavior is a Microsoft Windows feature called Hardware Support Apps. Microsoft allows hardware developers to pair a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app in the Microsoft Store that automatically installs based on a connected device's metadata (Microsoft Learn). Microsoft's own documentation states that automatic hardware support app installation "does not provide a notification to the user when the app is installed" and acknowledges that some users may find this confusing and frustrating (The Verge). The feature is not specific to LG. Dell similarly auto-installs its Alienware Command Center app on Windows when an Alienware monitor is connected (The Verge).

Gamers Nexus reported large pop-up advertisements for McAfee and LG's own apps appearing in the bottom-right corner of the home screen on 31 out of 32 bootups (The Verge). Reports about LG's app auto-installing on Windows date back to at least 2024, when users raised the issue on the Microsoft Tech Community forum (The Verge).

The LG Monitor App Installer's Microsoft Store page lists permissions to "use all system resources" and "access your Internet connection" (Microsoft Store). LG's privacy policy, linked from the installer, states that it automatically collects device data, internet activity, and geolocation information (The Verge).

Windows Pro users can block LG's app from auto-installing by applying a group policy setting. Home edition users have a more limited option: disabling automatic download of manufacturers' apps and custom icons through an Advanced system settings toggle (The Verge).

The broader context here is a tension that has existed in the Windows ecosystem for years. Microsoft built the Hardware Support App framework to improve the plug-and-play experience: connect a peripheral, and the matching companion software installs automatically so the user does not have to hunt for drivers. That design goal is legitimate. But the same plumbing that delivers a helpful settings utility can deliver an advertising channel, and there is no architectural distinction between the two once an OEM decides what to bundle.

LG's implementation is where that distinction collapses in practice. The Monitor App Installer adds no monitor control functionality of its own. It is a launcher for other LG apps and McAfee, paired with a privacy policy that claims broad data collection rights. The pop-up ads on 31 of 32 bootups are not a side effect of misconfiguration; they are the product's intended behavior. A user who simply plugged in a display is now receiving advertising and ceding telemetry, with no consent dialog at any point in the chain.

Worth flagging: the permissions model on the Microsoft Store listing compounds the problem. "Use all system resources" is an extraordinarily broad capability grant for an application whose stated purpose is to point users at other applications. Combined with automatic data collection covering device data, internet activity, and geolocation, the installer functions less like a hardware support tool and more like a persistent advertising and telemetry agent that piggybacks on a monitor connection.

Dell's Alienware Command Center auto-installation follows the same Microsoft mechanism, though the verified facts do not indicate whether Dell's app exhibits the same advertising behavior as LG's. The common thread is that Windows hands OEMs an automatic installation path with no user notification, and individual OEMs decide what to do with it. The framework's guardrails are essentially reputational.

In this author's view, the root issue is not that LG shipped an aggressive app, though it did. It is that Microsoft designed and maintains a distribution channel where the absence of user notification is a documented feature, not a bug. Microsoft's own documentation acknowledges users will find this confusing and frustrating, yet the framework persists unchanged. The mitigations available to users (group policy on Pro, a buried Advanced system settings toggle on Home) place the burden on the person connecting the monitor rather than on the OEM or the platform vendor.

The fact that reports trace back to at least 2024 and the behavior persists in mid-2026 suggests neither LG nor Microsoft has treated this as a problem requiring a fix. For IT administrators managing fleets of Windows machines, the group policy mitigation is workable. For the far larger population of Home edition users, the Advanced system settings toggle is the only defense, and it disables all manufacturer app auto-installation rather than allowing selective control.

The Hardware Support App framework is not inherently harmful, and the plug-and-play ideal it serves is one that has benefited Windows users for years. But when the framework's automatic, silent installation path is used to deliver advertising and broad data collection rather than device functionality, the design assumption that OEMs will act in good faith has been strained. The framework gives OEMs a door with no lock; LG walked through it carrying ads and a telemetry policy.
