Reddit Tops AI Citation Rankings, and Brands Are Already Gaming It

Reddit was the most-cited domain in May 2026 by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's Gemini, and Google's AI Mode, surpassing news publishers, scholarly repositories, and Wikipedia, according to data compiled for The Verge by Semrush, the SEO company owned by Adobe. The finding quantifies what marketers and platform watchers have sensed for months: Reddit's user-generated content has become a primary retrieval layer for generative search.

The same Semrush data shows that Google has substantially increased the frequency of AI Overviews in search queries with commercial intent — product research, brand comparisons — compared with a year ago. For brands, appearing in those AI-generated answers increasingly depends on appearing in the Reddit threads those answers draw from. The Verge

The incentive structure this creates is already producing exactly the behavior you would expect. A Reddit user named Primary-Taro4254 posted promotional messages praising Honeydew Labs' hypochlorous acid spray across multiple threads and skincare subreddits, including in discussions of unrelated products. The posts claimed the company uses a 0.02% hypochlorous acid concentration and that the product is accepted by the National Eczema Association. A member of r/SkincareAddiction — a subreddit with more than one million weekly visitors — posted a PSA warning others to "be aware of honeydew labs hypochlorous acid/ marketing bots." A moderator subsequently announced action against Primary-Taro4254 and said all Honeydew Labs posts would be automatically filtered for moderator review. Honeydew Labs did not respond to a request for comment, and Primary-Taro4254 did not respond to a Reddit message. The Verge

The Honeydew Labs case is one instance of a systemic pressure. Reddit has become significant to brands and marketers precisely because AI chatbots cite it frequently, as The Verge reports. That dynamic is amplified by the platform's own data-licensing arrangements: Reddit entered a licensing deal in February 2024 to give an unnamed large AI company access to its user-generated content. The more Reddit content feeds model training and retrieval, the more valuable it is to manipulate that content. The Verge

There is a familiar pattern at work here. Users began appending "Reddit" to Google search queries years ago as a workaround for SEO-optimized content they did not trust, a behavior The Verge noted in 2023. The same year, the publication documented ChatGPT being used to generate entire spam sites and reported that Reddit communities were staging blackouts in response to data scraping. The Verge's feature "The people who ruined the internet" argued that SEO practice had dismantled any illusion that the web was reliably informative. What is new is the compounding layer: AI search now routes around traditional SEO spam by citing Reddit, and that routing creates a fresh surface for the same manipulation to exploit. Reddit's own data suggests the platform is aware of the exposure. In a July 2026 announcement titled "Keeping Reddit Real and Safe in the AI Era," the company reported a roughly 20% reduction in spam exposure from January to March 2026 relative to the prior three months, followed by an additional 10–15% drop in the subsequent period covered by the announcement. Reddit's Transparency Report for July to December 2025 states that community moderators were responsible for 52.7% of post and comment removals, while company admins removed 44.7%. The platform's Content Policy prohibits content manipulation, and its Rules require users to participate authentically in communities where they have a personal interest, explicitly barring spamming and disruptive behaviors. The moderation burden is worth noting. More than half of all content removals still fall on unpaid community volunteers. As the commercial value of Reddit citations rises — driven by AI search tools that treat the platform as a high-signal source — the labor required to keep that signal clean grows accordingly. The r/SkincareAddiction moderators caught one operation. The question is how many similar operations across thousands of communities go undetected, and whether Reddit's automated spam reduction can keep pace with the incentive it has helped create.

This is the recurring tension of the web: each layer of mediation that routes around manipulation becomes, in turn, the next surface to manipulate. Google's AI Overviews pulling from Reddit threads is functionally a vote of confidence in the platform's content. That vote of confidence is also an invitation.
