A Sikorsky S64 firefighting helicopter with two people onboard crashed on Friday morning in central Utah near the Widemouth 2 fire, federal aviation authorities confirmed. Emergency personnel responded near Richfield, Utah, a city approximately 160 miles south of Salt Lake City. Tyler Hecht, deputy incident commander with the Great Basin incident management team, said rescuers had not yet reached the crash scene, partly because the impact ignited a secondary fire. The US Forest Service initially declined to comment on the condition of the helicopter's passengers. In a statement, the agency asked the public for "patience while we focus on response efforts."

The helicopter went down in the vicinity of the Widemouth 2 fire, a lightning-sparked blaze that had burned through 105,000 acres since igniting on 27 July. That fire is one of eight large active fires across Utah. Collectively, those eight fires have swept through more than 331,000 acres, according to state fire information data.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox acknowledged the crash in a social media post, writing that "wildland firefighting is among the most dangerous jobs in the world."

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are both investigating the crash. The S64, a heavy-lift rotorcraft manufactured by Sikorsky, is a mainstay of aerial firefighting operations in the western United States, used for water and retardant drops on large wildfire incidents. The circumstances of the crash, including whether mechanical failure, environmental conditions, or fire behavior played a role, have not been disclosed.

The broader context here is the strain on aerial firefighting assets during one of the most active wildfire seasons Utah has faced in recent years. Eight large fires burning simultaneously across the state place substantial demand on a finite fleet of rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft, each requiring maintenance cycles, crew rotation, and operational coordination across multiple incident management teams. The loss or grounding of even a single heavy-lift helicopter compounds that pressure, potentially redirecting assets from one active fire line to another and narrowing the tactical options available to incident commanders.

Hecht's account that the crash itself ignited a new fire adds a layer of operational complexity. Responders now face a secondary ignition point in terrain already described as difficult, which could delay both the rescue effort and the NTSB's on-scene investigation. Aircraft crash investigations typically require preservation of the wreckage in situ, documentation of impact patterns, and recovery of flight data components, all of which are complicated when the site is actively burning or inaccessible.

The fact that the Widemouth 2 fire was already lightning-caused and had been burning for nearly two weeks before this incident suggests a sustained, resource-intensive suppression campaign. With 105,000 acres consumed and the fire still active, the deployment of heavy-lift helicopters like the S64 into that environment is consistent with standard large-fire aviation doctrine, which positions rotorcraft for direct line support and structure protection where ground access is limited.

Governor Cox's statement, while brief, frames the event within the occupational hazards that wildland firefighters and aviation crews face during extended campaign fires. The Great Basin incident management team's involvement indicates a Type 1 or Type 2 incident command structure, the tier typically assigned to fires exceeding complex thresholds of size, complexity, or threat to values at risk.

The investigation by the FAA and NTSB will likely focus on flight path reconstruction, aircraft maintenance records, pilot communications, and real-time fire weather and visibility conditions at the time of the crash.
