A powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on the morning of 10 August 2026, killing at least 77 people and causing serious damage, including building collapses with people trapped inside (Reuters). The quake hit at 7:34 a.m. local time and was felt across much of the country, including the capital city Bogotá, about 250 miles away (NBC News).

The U.S. Geological Survey located the center of the earthquake near a town called San Jose del Palmar, in a region of Colombia called Chocó. The quake originated about 107 km (66 miles) below the surface. That is deeper than many earthquakes, which helps explain something important: the shaking was less intense right at the center than it might have been, but it spread much farther — reaching cities like Bogotá and Cali (Reuters). Colombia's national disaster agency, known as UNGRD, confirmed the quake's size and timing in a bulletin from Bogotá (UNGRD).

The number of people killed is still being confirmed. Reuters reported at least 77 deaths, while The New York Times reported at least 69 (The New York Times). NBC News confirmed serious damage and people trapped in collapsed buildings but did not give a death count. In the early hours after a disaster like this, casualty numbers often change as more information comes in, so these figures should be treated as preliminary.

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella announced he was personally taking charge of the emergency response (Reuters Connect). By putting the national government in direct control, he can speed up getting military and rescue teams to the affected areas, cutting through the usual layers of regional coordination. This also means the responsibility for how the rescue goes — good or bad — falls directly on the president himself.

The broader context here is that Colombia sits on a part of the Earth where three giant pieces of the planet's outer shell, called tectonic plates, meet and slowly grind against each other. These plates are called the Nazca, South American, and Caribbean plates. Their constant movement makes Colombia one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. The Colombian Geological Survey, or SGC, runs a network of sensors that monitors this activity around the clock. The 10 August quake is the most destructive one in the country since a magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit near El Calvario, Meta, on 17 August 2023, at a much shallower depth of less than 30 km (SGC). After that 2023 quake, the SGC published a detailed report on the aftershocks — the smaller earthquakes that follow a big one — the very next day, which gives a sense of the kind of follow-up monitoring they will likely do now (SGC).

Earthquakes that happen deep underground, like this one at 107 km, release their energy far from the surface. Think of it like a stone dropped deep in a pool: the splash right above is smaller, but the ripples travel much farther across the water. That is why people in Bogotá and Cali felt the shaking even though they were far from the center. At the same time, many older buildings in western Colombian towns were not built to withstand strong shaking, and the mountainous landscape makes it harder to assess the damage quickly.

Before the main earthquake, the SGC had recorded several smaller quakes in the region during August 2026. On 7 August, the agency's tracker listed one near Briceño, Boyacá, and another near Choachí, Cundinamarca, at 4:39 p.m. local time (SGC). Later that same day, at 9:11 p.m., the SGC recorded a magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Cumbal, Nariño, at a shallow depth of 8 km (SGC). These smaller events are part of the routine background shaking the region experiences all the time and should not be read as warning signs of the larger quake that followed.

Looking ahead, rescue and recovery efforts will likely focus on the western areas closest to where the quake originated. The depth of the earthquake may have reduced the worst destruction right at the center, but it spread the shaking across a larger area than a shallower quake would have. That means aid teams have to reach people spread out across difficult mountain terrain rather than one single damaged zone. The coming days will test whether President De La Espriella's government can manage a disaster response across multiple regions at once while keeping the public informed as casualty numbers continue to come in.
