Google announced the Pixel 11 Pro Fold on August 12, 2026. It has a stronger hinge, a brighter outer screen, and a new chip called the Tensor G6. The phone starts at $1,899 for 256GB of storage, with a 512GB version at $2,019. It comes in two colors: Olive and Obsidian. TechCrunch CNET

The biggest physical change is a new, stronger hinge — the part that lets the phone fold and unfold. Google also made the phone 1mm thinner and about 20 grams lighter than the previous model. Both screens are 20% brighter than before. The outer screen, which you use when the phone is folded shut, can reach 3,600 nits of brightness, which is as bright as top-tier regular phones. The Tensor G6 chip is made using TSMC's N2 process. TSMC is the company that manufactures the chip, and N2 refers to making the tiny switches inside the chip even smaller — 2 nanometers across. Smaller switches generally use less power and generate less heat. Google also updated the image processor, allowing 30x digital zoom, up from 20x on the prior model. One trade-off stands out: the battery has been reduced from 5,015 mAh to 4,750 mAh. Whether the new chip's efficiency and the lighter overall design make up for that smaller battery is something only real-world testing will show. The phone supports 25W wireless charging. TechCrunch

The broader context here is that folding phones have been moving away from being fragile, first-generation products toward something that holds up to daily use. A stronger hinge and a thinner, lighter body address the two biggest concerns people have had about folding phones: how long the screen crease holds up and whether the phone fits comfortably in a pocket.

The new chip's manufacturing process is worth flagging separately. Google's Tensor chips have improved over several generations, but earlier versions drew valid criticism for getting too hot and slowing down under heavy use. If the new 2-nanometer process delivers the efficiency it promises, it could make a real difference for AI features, on-device Gemini tools, and the image processing that powers the new 30x zoom. That is a conditional statement; the proof will come from testing under real conditions.

The battery reduction is the number that gives pause. Cutting 265 mAh while adding a brighter, more power-hungry screen and a new chip is a bet that efficiency gains will outpace the smaller battery. It is not an unreasonable bet, but it is a bet, and folding phone users have historically been vocal about battery life since two screens draw more power than one. The 25W wireless charging helps with top-ups, though it does not solve the underlying capacity question.

At $1,899, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is expensive, and folding phones in general have stayed costly across all manufacturers. The stronger hinge, the thinner and lighter body, the new 2nm chip, and the 48-megapixel camera with extended zoom give Google a solid improvement story. Whether that story justifies the price depends on how the battery and heat management hold up under daily use — the two factors that could either validate or undermine the rest of the engineering decisions.
