Google's New Pixel Watch 5 Can Track Your Blood Pressure and Work Without Your Phone

Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 on August 12, 2026. The new smartwatch includes smarter AI features, two new health tools that go beyond basic fitness tracking, and the ability to use its voice assistant without an internet connection. The smaller 41mm model costs $399; the larger 44mm model costs $429. Pre-orders opened Wednesday, and the watch goes on sale August 20 TechCrunch.
The watch uses a new processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2, built specifically for smartwatches. It is 12% faster and has 50% more memory than the previous model, with Google saying the watch feels 20% faster overall. The battery lasts up to 40 hours. New color options include Canyon Fog and Olive.
Gemini, Google's AI assistant, is the main feature of the software. You can raise your wrist to ask questions or get directions to nearby places. Importantly, Gemini can also work offline, meaning you do not need your phone or an internet connection to set timers, alarms, or start workouts by voice. The watch also suggests actions on its own, like recommending a reply when you get a text message. Flight information and arrival estimates show up automatically at the bottom of the watch face.
Sleep tracking is 15% more accurate at telling which stage of sleep you are in compared to the previous model. The watch also adds a new metric that tracks changes in your blood oxygen levels throughout the night, minute by minute. A new bedtime watch face and a Smart Wake feature, which tries to wake you at the best point in your sleep cycle, round out the sleep features. Route mapping, used for tracking runs and walks, is said to be twice as accurate as before.
The blood pressure feature uses the watch's sensors and machine learning (a type of artificial intelligence that learns patterns from large amounts of data). Google tested it against the standard medical tool for tracking blood pressure over a full day, and trained its system on more than 1 billion minutes of data from over 500,000 people. The insulin resistance detection combines information from your sleep, heart rate, physical activity, and other health data, analyzed over time to spot long-term changes. Insulin resistance is an early warning sign that the body may be heading toward type 2 diabetes. Google gives users a monthly summary of blood pressure and insulin resistance trends.
These features did not come out of nowhere. Google published a study on predicting insulin resistance using wearable data in the journal Nature in March 2026, alongside an ongoing study on high blood pressure using wearable data Google Blog. A Fitbit study on using the Pixel Watch to identify signs of high blood pressure was reported in September 2025 9to5Google. The March 2026 posts described these as research; the August launch turns them into features people can actually use.
The watch also has a safety feature: if it detects a lasting drop in blood oxygen and thinks a breathing emergency may be happening, it will call emergency services on its own. That feature launches first in select European countries.
The launch was not a complete surprise. In late July 2026, the Pixel Watch 5 could already be configured in Google Health before any official announcement Droid Life. An early August leak revealed battery life, specs, and features including dust- and water-resistance Android Police.
The broader context here is that the blood pressure and insulin resistance features are different from step counting or heart-rate zones. They are estimates based on indirect signals, checked against medical-grade tools but not themselves medical tests that can diagnose a condition. Google's training data is large, and the published study in a major scientific journal gives it more credibility than most smartwatch health claims. Even so, there is a real gap between what a model predicts for a large group of people and what a doctor measures for one individual. Monthly trend summaries do not close that gap. Users and doctors should treat these features as directional hints, not precise measurements.
In my view, the emergency blood-oxygen feature raises a separate concern. Automatically calling emergency services is a serious action with clear benefits but also the risk of false alarms. Google's choice to launch in select European countries first points to a careful regulatory approach rather than a technical limitation. How well it works in real life, where blood oxygen can drop for harmless reasons during sleep, will decide whether this feature is genuinely protective or a source of unnecessary emergency calls.
The offline Gemini feature matters more than it might seem. Being able to set timers, alarms, and workouts by voice without needing your phone nearby fixes one of the most common complaints about earlier Google smartwatches. Combined with the faster processor and 40-hour battery, the Pixel Watch 5 fixes several practical problems that kept earlier versions from feeling complete.
Google is betting that smart health estimates and on-device AI, rather than new sensors alone, are what will set the next wave of wearables apart. The Pixel Watch 5 makes a strong case for that idea. Whether shoppers and regulators agree will become clear over the coming months.
