On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will pass over Iceland. That means the moon will move directly between the Earth and the sun, completely blocking the sun's light for a few minutes. It is Iceland's first total solar eclipse since 1954 (NASA SVS, NASA Science).

The moon's shadow will travel along a long path. It starts near the North Pole in far northern Siberia, sweeps south through the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans, crosses western Iceland and northern Spain, and then continues over Greenland, northern Russia, and the Atlantic. Western Iceland and northern Spain are the main populated places where people will see the sun fully disappear. Hundreds of visitors are expected to travel to Iceland for the event, with local preparations well underway as of August 11, 2026 (Al Jazeera). A five-day festival called Iceland Eclipse runs from August 11 through 15, timed to surround the day of the eclipse. The broader context here is that science agencies and tourism businesses are increasingly working together around eclipses. Spain's place in the path adds a second European viewing spot. Northern Spain will see the sun fully blocked as the shadow continues south after leaving the North Atlantic. Having two populated land areas in the path — Iceland and Spain — makes this eclipse unusual compared to ones that mostly pass over Arctic regions or open ocean, where land-based viewing is limited.

The eclipse path starts near the North Pole in far northern Siberia, meaning the shadow crosses some of the most remote terrain on Earth before reaching places where people live.
