On August 12, 2026, a company called Heart Aerospace flew its electric airplane, the X1, for the first time at an airport in Upstate New York. The X1 is a prototype, a full-scale test version built to prove the technology works before the company makes its final product. Heart Aerospace calls it the heaviest electric vehicle ever built. Before the flight, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the government agency that regulates air travel, gave Heart Aerospace a Special Airworthiness Certificate on July 23, 2026. Heart Aerospace's next step is the ES-30, a 30-seat plane that will use both batteries and a conventional fuel-burning engine. On batteries alone, it is designed to fly 125 miles. With the fuel engine helping, that range extends to 500 miles. The company wants the ES-30 to start carrying passengers by 2031. The under-five-dollar fuel cost is the number that matters most. For context, a conventional small aircraft can burn tens or even hundreds of dollars of aviation fuel on a similar flight. If that electricity cost holds up as the plane grows to full size with 30 passengers aboard, it would change the economics of short flights in a way few other technologies have come close to doing.

The first flight was deliberately cautious. Twenty-seven minutes at 1,100 feet is what test pilots call a conservative first hop, where the goal is simply to confirm the aircraft flies safely before pushing it harder in later tests. The X1's stated maximums of 259 km/h and 2,000 feet mean there is plenty of room for the test team to go further. The ES-30's target ranges of 125 miles on batteries and 500 miles with the fuel engine put it in the regional aviation market, meaning shorter flights between smaller cities. Those routes have struggled for years with high pilot costs, unpredictable fuel prices, and competition from trains, buses, and cars. The 2031 target for carrying passengers gives Heart Aerospace about five years to move from testing through to full certification. That is an ambitious schedule but not an impossible one for a new aircraft program.
