The Verge has published a head-to-head test of five robot lawnmowers on a flat, three-quarter-acre property with sandy soil and centipede grass in coastal South Carolina. The review, published August 13, 2026, tested mowers from Segway, Mammotion, Husqvarna, Roborock, and Dreame, and found that most of them now use the same underlying technology to find their way around your yard. That technology is called RTK, which stands for real-time kinematic positioning. Regular GPS, like what your phone uses, can tell where you are to within a few meters. RTK adds a fixed reference station on the ground that sends correction signals, narrowing that margin down to about a centimeter. That level of accuracy is what lets a robot mower cut straight, even lines instead of wandering around the lawn. GPS signals can drop when a mower goes under trees, near buildings, or into other spots where the sky is partly blocked. To deal with this, the RTK-based mowers now pair satellite positioning with a second navigation system — either lidar or vSLAM (visual simultaneous localization and mapping, which means the robot uses a camera to build a picture of its surroundings and figure out where it is within that picture). This two-layer approach keeps the mower on track even when satellite accuracy drops.

The category has moved quickly. In The Verge's earlier comparison published May 8, 2025, under the headline "I put four robot lawnmowers through a brutal backyard battle," only the Dreame and the Mammotion produced perfect lawn lines. Segway's Navimow line includes the entry-level i Series and the higher-capacity X3 Series. The i Series weighs 24 lbs, has a waterproof rating of IP66, and can store yard maps up to 20% larger than its rated mowing area. Navimow The X3 Series runs for 200 minutes on an 80-minute charge. Navimow Wirecutter independently tested the Navimow i215 and reported that its front-facing camera easily recorded the yard's perimeter and avoided all obstacles placed in its path. Mammotion's LUBA 3 AWD, currently listed at $2,399 on Mammotion's US site, uses all-wheel drive to handle slopes up to 80% (about 39 degrees) and covers up to 5,000 square meters of lawn per 145-minute charge cycle. It weighs 41 lbs and uses what Mammotion calls Triple-Tech navigation, combining lidar, networked RTK, and AI in a wire-free setup. The broader context here is how quickly this category has converged. Three years ago, robot lawnmowers were split between old-school perimeter-wire systems (where you bury a cable around your lawn to create a boundary), early RTK adopters, and camera-based approaches that struggled with reliability. Today, nearly every brand uses RTK as its primary navigation, with lidar or camera-based systems as backup. The shift to NetRTK, where mowers pull correction data from a shared cloud network instead of a personal antenna, mirrors a similar move in precision agriculture and surveying.

The pricing story is straightforward. Entry-level wire-free mowers now start near $1,799, which puts them in the same range as a high-end traditional self-propelled mower plus a couple of seasons of professional lawn service. At the top end, the LUBA 2 AWD 2.5-acre model at $4,499 costs about as much as installing a multi-zone irrigation system — a different purchase, but the same household-budget category.

The one outlier is Dreame, which uses lidar only and skips the antenna entirely. The trade-off is that lidar works best when a yard has plenty of physical features — fences, walls, landscaping — for the laser to bounce off. Open, flat lawns without those features present a harder problem for a technology originally designed for structured indoor spaces.
