The Witcher 4 Is Coming in 2028 — Here's What CD Projekt Red Announced

CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher series, is aiming to release The Witcher 4 in 2028. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the release window in a video ahead of Gamescom, a major gaming event The Verge. The studio also shared plans for a new expansion for The Witcher 3 and new details about a multiplayer game set in the Witcher world.
The Witcher 3 expansion, called Songs of the Past, is scheduled for release sometime in 2027. It will be shown during Gamescom's Opening Night Live event, hosted by Geoff Keighley, which starts at 2PM ET on Tuesday The Verge. The expansion continues support for a game that has been a major source of revenue and identity for the studio.
On the multiplayer side, CD Projekt Red is developing a spinoff game set in The Witcher universe, codenamed Project Siris The Verge. The project has hit a bump: in August, the studio confirmed layoffs affecting staff working on the spinoff The Verge. The studio has not said how the job cuts affect the project's scope or timing.
The 2028 target for The Witcher 4 is part of a larger release plan that CD Projekt Red has been sharing over the past year. In November 2025, Nowakowski said The Witcher 4 would not get a new trailer at The Game Awards GamingBible. At the same time, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 would not launch until 2028 at the earliest GamingBible.
The 2020 launch of Cyberpunk 2077 still hangs over the studio. In June 2026, Nowakowski said the studio has not yet completed a "full redemption arc" after what he called the "heartbreaking" launch of Cyberpunk 2077 IGN. The game shipped with serious technical problems on older consoles, which led to widespread refunds and months of fixes after release.
That history matters when you look at the 2028 target for The Witcher 4. The studio lost trust with both players and investors after Cyberpunk 2077, and Nowakowski's language suggests the studio knows that a strong Witcher 4 launch is about winning back confidence, not just releasing a game. A 2028 window gives the studio roughly two years, which is normal for a large role-playing game but leaves little room for delays if the studio wants to avoid further damage to its reputation.
The studio is also juggling several projects at once. Songs of the Past is set for 2027, The Witcher 4 may follow in 2028, and a Cyberpunk sequel is no earlier than that same year. Meanwhile, the multiplayer spinoff has already lost staff, and multiplayer games are expensive and complex to build. When studios cut jobs during development, they often end up shrinking the game's scope, delaying it, or both.
None of these dates are set in stone. CD Projekt Red has consistently used words like "target" and "aim" rather than confirming firm release dates. The studio's own history is a reminder: Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed multiple times before its troubled launch. The Gamescom announcements give players a picture of what to expect, but whether the studio can deliver on all of these projects at once is what will determine if that picture holds up.
