Massive Warehouse Fire in California Threatens Medical Supply Chain

A large warehouse fire broke out at a medical supply facility in Tracy, California, on June 11, 2026, around 1 p.m., sending dark smoke into the air and forcing people to evacuate the area, according to AP News.
The warehouse belongs to Medline Industries, one of the biggest companies in the United States that makes and delivers medical supplies. The building is enormous—about one million square feet, roughly the size of 14 football fields. Fighting such a massive fire required firefighters from multiple departments working together. The Los Angeles Times reported on the scale of the blaze. The warehouse had sprinkler systems inside, AP News noted, though it's unclear whether they worked properly or if the fire simply overwhelmed them.
The smoke created unhealthy air quality in Tracy and beyond, AP News reported. When medical equipment and supplies burn, they release particles and chemicals that make the air unsafe to breathe. People living nearby were told to leave the area.
Tracy sits about 60 miles east of San Francisco in a valley that has become a major hub for warehouses and distribution centers. The location is valuable because it's close to the San Francisco Bay Area and has good access to highways. Many of these warehouses store goods worth hundreds of millions of dollars. When one warehouse gets damaged, it can create problems for businesses and customers that rely on those supplies.
This fire is more serious than a typical warehouse fire because Medline supplies hospitals, nursing homes, and doctors' offices all across America. Most hospitals keep extra supplies on hand and buy from multiple companies, so a single fire won't immediately hurt patients. But if this warehouse stays closed for a long time, hospitals may struggle to find certain items like medical gloves, protective gowns, and bandages. These supplies have low profit margins, meaning companies don't make much money on them, and they don't have many other places to buy them from.
The firefighting effort required so many resources because of the building's size and what was stored inside. Modern large warehouses typically use special sprinkler systems designed to put out fires in tall storage piles. If the fire spread quickly even with working sprinklers, investigators will want to understand why.
As of mid-June 2026, officials had not yet determined what caused the fire. No one was reported injured.
