The Knicks Finally Won the Championship. Here's What Just Changed.

The New York Knicks won the NBA championship on December 16, 2025. They beat the San Antonio Spurs 124-113 in Game 5 of the Finals, according to NBA.com. It was the Knicks' first title in 53 years.

OG Anunoby scored 28 points to lead the team. Jalen Brunson added 25. The Knicks held on to win by 11 points.

The last time the Knicks won a championship was 1973. That team had Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Dave DeBusschere. The NBA was very different then—fewer teams, simpler salary rules, and players mostly from the United States. Today's Knicks play in a league with 30 teams and players from all over the world. The salary cap (a limit on how much each team can spend) makes it much harder to build a winning team. But both championship teams played in Madison Square Garden, in front of the same devoted fans.

Anunoby came to the Knicks in a trade from Toronto in late 2023. It was a signal that the team wanted to win right away. His performance in the Finals showed that bet paid off. Brunson signed a long-term contract with the team and has been their main scorer. In the playoffs, he played at a high level—the kind of play that separates players who will stay for years from those who come and go.

The Spurs went to the Finals because of Victor Wembanyama, a young player they drafted in 2023. He is very tall and very skilled. Losing this Finals doesn't hurt them as much as it would hurt an older team. San Antonio has won before. Their front office knows this loss is just one step in a longer journey.

For the Knicks, this win erases a 53-year gap. New York is the biggest media market in basketball. Madison Square Garden is the most famous arena. Missing a championship for this long had become part of the team's identity—sometimes a joke, sometimes painful. Now that chapter is closed.

The rest of the Eastern Conference now has to plan around a new reality. The Knicks have won the title and their two best players are signed for years to come. Other teams will have to think differently about how to compete with them. The Knicks also face a new kind of pressure: defending what they just built. For 53 years, they chased a championship. Now they have to keep one.
