Brave or Vivaldi: Which Privacy Browser Should You Use?

Brave and Vivaldi are two browsers designed to protect your privacy and block ads. They're similar in goals but different in how they work.

Brave keeps things simple. It's free on phones, tablets, and computers. When you open it, ad and tracker blocking is already on — you don't have to do anything. Brave also has its own search engine built in, which is different from most other browsers that use Google or Bing. Brave makes money through optional ads shown to people who opt in to see them.

Vivaldi is built for people who like tinkering. It has all the privacy tools Brave has, but also includes a notes app, email client, calendar, and feed reader. You can rearrange almost every part of the interface however you want. It's like having a computer inside your browser.

Both browsers are based on the same core technology that powers Google Chrome. This means they get the same security updates and can use the same extensions. However, the privacy features they add on top are their own.

In terms of keeping you safe from tracking, both do the job well. Brave emphasizes making your browser harder to identify (called fingerprinting) and letting you browse privately. Vivaldi blocks trackers and ads too, but that's just one piece of what the browser offers.

The practical question comes down to what you want. If you're using your browser on both your phone and your computer, and you want it to just work without setup, Brave is the easier choice. If you're someone who spends all day in your browser and enjoys customizing everything, Vivaldi gives you more options to play with.

Neither browser will replace Chrome for most people. But if privacy matters to you and you want something different from what Google offers, both are solid choices that have been around long enough to prove they're not going anywhere.
