Your Free iPhone Update Arrives Monday: What iOS 27 Changes

iOS 27, a free iPhone update, arrives Monday, September 14, at around 10:00 a.m. MacRumors
It comes just days after new devices. On September 9, 2026, Apple showed the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, plus the iPhone Duo, Apple Watch Ultra 4, Apple Watch Series 12 with an all-new Health Sensing System, AirPods 5 with open-ear Active Noise Cancellation, and new health and fitness features that use Apple Intelligence.
If you keep your current phone, the big change is Siri. Apple says iOS 27 has an all-new Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence. It brings a new Siri app, text that is easier to read, faster speed, and new child safety features. Engadget
Those smart features need a newer phone. They work on iPhone 16 models or later. The same Siri AI features were shared for early testing by developers in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27. One example Apple names is splitting bills with Apple Cash and Apple Intelligence.
First, make room and charge up. Keep 18 to 25GB of free space for the download and short-term files. Fifty percent battery should be enough, but keep the phone plugged in and on Wi-Fi while it updates.
Save a copy first, like packing a spare bag before a trip. On the phone, go to Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now, or save to a Mac or Windows PC. Keep your Apple ID username and password close by so you do not get locked out. If you have iOS 26.6, install that small prep update first. It organizes Siri information to make the move to iOS 27 smoother.
You can update by hand or let the phone do it later. To update by hand, open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update, and wait for iOS 27 to show. To set automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. With Automatically Install on, the phone will not update at once. It will wait until it is charging and on Wi-Fi overnight.
Automatic updates take more time. You may get the notice days or weeks after release. That wait is normal. It spreads out internet traffic and problem reports.
You can also update with a computer. In Finder, plug in the device, select it, click General, then Check for Update, then Download and Update. In iTunes, plug in the device, click the device button at the top, click the Summary tab, then Check for Update. iPhone and iPad can get updates ready over Wi-Fi or cellular. If the update will not finish, remove the waiting file at Settings > General > [Device] Storage, pick the update, then Delete Update.
The broader context here is that this is a big behind-the-scenes move, not only new buttons. The prep update, the large space needed, overnight charging, and slow rollout point to large changes inside the phone. For families, it helps to update a second device first and check the backup and Apple ID before updating the main phone. I have watched my own kids pick up each new system, and those small helpers, clearer text, faster Siri on the phone itself, and easier bill splitting, save a little time each day.
