Apple's New Siri Has Arrived, but You Might Have to Wait

Apple has released iOS 27 to the public, and the new Siri AI comes with it as a limited beta. The release follows months of testing and includes iOS 27 plus the other 27.0 updates.
Siri AI is made for normal, back-and-forth talk, like ChatGPT and Gemini. Apple says it is powered by Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI system. It works inside the operating system with access to emails, messages and other material on the device, so it can use your own information instead of only taking short voice orders. It is like a helper who can read your notes, with your permission. Apple
Apple worked with Google to build the AI behind Siri AI, using much of the same base as Gemini. Apple has not said how much work happens on the phone and how much happens in the cloud, except that Siri AI uses its Private Cloud Compute system, its secure online computers. Apple says that system is built to stop eavesdropping and data collection. Engadget
Updating your phone is not enough. On iPhone and iPad you must go to Settings > Siri > Try Siri AI (Beta). That puts you on a waitlist, and wait times vary. Once your account clears, the needed files download by themselves. As of Sept. 21, 2026, that waitlist is still there even for updated phones that qualify.
At first the beta works only in English. Support for French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean is expected in October 2026. It covers iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. The next generation of Apple Intelligence turns on by itself on phones that qualify when you install the 27.0 updates, so Siri AI is the exception that needs a second sign-up.
Many phones can get iOS 27, but fewer can get Siri AI. iOS 27 runs back to the iPhone 11 series. Siri AI does not. Phones older than the iPhone 15 Pro line are left out, including the basic iPhone 15 models. That leaves the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 16 series and newer. On iPad, you need a seventh-generation iPad mini with A17 Pro or an iPad with M1 or later.
Some voice tools need even newer phones. Expressive Voices and Advanced Dictation need iPhone 17 Pro or newer. So there are three groups: devices that run iOS 27, a smaller group that runs Siri AI, and an even smaller group with all the voice tools.
Place also matters. You cannot join the waitlist if your Apple Account region is China or a country in the European Union. Apple has said it will not release Siri AI in the European Union with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 because of a competition law called the Digital Markets Act. Apple
The EU problem is about access to system data. The European Commission has told Apple to give other AI companies the same access to the system data Siri AI uses under that law. Apple says sharing that access could harm user privacy. That matches its claim that Private Cloud Compute is a closed system against eavesdropping and collection, while the Commission treats equal access as a fairness rule.
The broader context here helps with planning. Large AI helpers are now often released with betas, waitlists and chip limits to avoid overloading inference capacity, the computing power used to run AI answers, or breaking older phones. In my view the waitlist matters less than the design: deep access to mail and messages paired with AI built partly outside Apple. That puts heavy trust on the privacy wall between the phone system, Apple's cloud and the model maker. For work phones, managers need to check which devices meet the iPhone 15 Pro, A17 Pro and M1 cutoffs and decide if the beta is allowed where work mail lives. For app makers, the EU fight matters more than the October languages. If permissions stay Apple-only in the U.S. and U.K. but open up in the EU, Siri could act differently by place and make testing harder.
Looking ahead, the hopeful case is simple. A helper that understands plain talk and can find things in your own stuff removes problems that have held voice control back from the start. My kids started using chatbots right away and never used old Siri for more than timers. If this beta can find personal details correctly without sharing them, that gap may finally close.
