Google has released a free update for Pixel phones and Pixel watches. It makes it faster to reach favorite people, warns about more scam texts, and adds new watch controls. Engadget

Google shared the details on September 15, 2026. Phone updates are for Pixel 6 and newer. Watch updates are for Pixel Watch 5.

One phone change is for VIP contacts, the people you contact most. New home-screen buttons let you call or text a favorite without opening the phone app first. The phone will also show new badges for urgent and unread messages from those people.

Scam warnings now work in more places. The phone can flag possible scam chat messages in notifications in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan and France. In the US only, warnings will also appear inside Gboard, Google's keyboard. That helps when you reply from a preview without opening the full chat app, like a spam filter for texts.

All Pixel Watch 5 devices get the Wear OS 7 update. It includes a more personal Gemini, Google's helper, that works without internet. It also tracks walking and running routes more accurately. You do not need your phone nearby for some questions.

The watch also gets more one-hand control. Pinching thumb and finger together twice can now open notifications, scroll Gemini answers, scroll payment cards in Wallet, and move through Google Maps reviews. The same squeeze already answers calls, snoozes alarms, and plays music without touching the screen.

Pixel 6 and newer phones can use Harry Potter Audiobook Packs, which change background pictures, icons and sounds. Eligible users in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan and Australia also get two free months of Audible.

This Pixel Drop comes with the September 2026 Android Drop, which Google started sending out earlier in the month. Google That update adds Find Hub Remembered to remember where you left things, a tool to feel less sick in cars, and a way to make and edit notes right from chat. Google

The broader context here is simple. This update does not add new chips or sensors. It connects current tools in better ways. VIP badges change how messages are sorted. Scam warnings use the same checker in new places. The pinch uses the same movement for new tasks. In my view, that is why this kind of update changes daily life more than new specs. The phone stays the same but takes fewer steps.

For parents and anyone who helps others with phones, two practical points help to know. First, scam warnings differ by country. Notification alerts cover ten markets, keyboard alerts are US-only. Second, offline help and better tracking keep more work on the watch. That helps on runs and trips, but it uses more battery and storage. I saw this with my own kids. They pinned three contacts to the home screen and ignored the rest. Once people get a shortcut, they want it everywhere.
