Google Calendar has made a change to how you color-code your events. Instead of choosing from 11 fixed colors, you can now pick from up to 200 custom colors for each event.

You might wonder why this matters. If you use Calendar for just a couple of things — work, personal time, maybe a hobby — eleven colors is plenty. But if you manage multiple projects, track time for different clients, or organize lots of categories, you run out of colors quickly. Once that happens, the visual system breaks down. Different things end up with the same color, and the color-coding stops being useful.

With 200 custom colors, you can pick exactly the shade you want. That means you can match your Calendar colors to the colors used in other apps you work with — a project tool, your company's brand colors, or your own system. If you commute for work but also travel with family, you can now use noticeably different colors for each, instead of picking from whatever eleven options were available.

Google has not yet explained exactly how you will pick these colors — whether you paste in color codes, use a color picker, or choose from a list. You will find out once the feature reaches your account.

One useful detail: these colors are personal to you. If you share a calendar with someone else, they see the same events, but they can color-code them differently on their own view. Your colors don't overwrite theirs, and vice versa.

This is part of a pattern where Google has been quietly adding tools that let power users get more specific control over their calendars and other productivity apps. It is not a flashy overhaul, just a practical improvement.

For most people, this upgrade will be automatic. There is nothing you need to set up, and it will not disrupt how you use Calendar today.
