Instagram has updated its carousel feature—the one where you swipe through multiple photos in a single post. You can now include up to 20 photos instead of the previous limit of 10, and each photo can have its own caption.

This is a bigger change than it might sound. Now you can tell the story of all 12 steps in one post, with a caption under each photo.

The ability to caption each photo individually is the more important part. Previously, a carousel post could only have one caption for the entire group of photos — the text you saw at the top. Now each slide can have its own explanation. This makes carousels work better for things like how-to guides, photo essays with detailed captions, or even content in multiple languages where different photos need different text.

This shift makes Instagram carousels more like a slideshow or presentation, similar to what you might do in PowerPoint. Other platforms have been moving in this direction too — LinkedIn lets you upload documents, and Pinterest has multi-image pins for the same reason: creators want to share more information in one place.

If you use Instagram just for sharing photos, this change probably won't affect you much. But if you use apps or tools that manage your Instagram posts — like scheduling software or analytics dashboards — those tools may need to be updated. Engineers who built those tools made assumptions about how carousels work, and those assumptions are now outdated.

Instagram hasn't said whether having more text and photos in a carousel will change how often these posts appear in your feed compared to Reels or regular photos. That's something creators will probably test out over the coming weeks.

Overall, this update fits with how Instagram has been evolving recently: making each type of post more useful rather than asking you to use an entirely new feature. You already know how to swipe through photos, so there is nothing new to learn.
