Fire at a Big Hotel in Folkestone: 280 People Had to Leave Overnight
About 280 people had to leave the Grand Burstin hotel in Folkestone after a fire overnight.
Emergency workers were called just after 1am on Saturday 19 September 2026. Kent Police said officers were called at around 1:20am about a fire at a hotel on Marine Parade, Folkestone The Guardian. Kent Fire and Rescue Service said 26 fire engines were sent at about 01:05 BST BBC.
The fire service said the fire is believed to have started in the basement. The cause is not yet known. No injuries from the fire were reported. In a later update, ten fire engines stayed at the scene.
Folkestone and Hythe District Council opened a welfare centre at Three Hills Sports Park for the people who left the hotel. The Grand Burstin looks over Folkestone's harbour and has 550 rooms.
Looking at what this means for the response, many teams had to work together in the middle of the night. Moving about 280 people means counting everyone, finding transport and giving them a safe place to wait when staff numbers are low and facts are still coming in. The welfare centre worked like a central check-in point, one place to be counted, get help and hear about next steps.
The broader context here is the usual order for fires like this. Many engines arrive first to bring the fire under control. Fewer stay later to watch the scene and look for clues. The basement is where investigators will look first, but the cause is still an open question. For the people who left, the worries are rooms, belongings and information. For officials, they are safety, teamwork and staying in touch with a spread-out group.
In my view, three things matter next. Whether the number evacuated changes, whether people can go back inside, and what investigators find about the start and cause of the fire. No reported injuries keeps the immediate human cost lower. Updates will come from Marine Parade and Three Hills Sports Park.
