Australia has detected bird flu—specifically a dangerous strain called H5N1—in a wild seabird found near Esperance in Western Australia on 20 June 2026. Scientists at CSIRO confirmed the result, and the government announced it the same day.
This is the same type of bird flu that has killed many birds and poultry across Europe, the Americas, and parts of Asia over the past four years. The virus arrived in Australia by traveling with migratory seabirds—ocean birds that fly between distant regions.
