The National Party is holding its annual conference this weekend in Lower Hutt, just across the harbour from Wellington. The two-day event runs Saturday 20 June and Sunday 21 June at the Lower Hutt Event Centre.

The party is planning to announce a new election policy during the conference. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who leads National, will be the main focus of the gathering as the party prepares for next year's general election.

What happens at a party conference

Annual conferences like this one serve two purposes. First, there's the internal party work: members vote on changes to rules, select candidates, and deal with other organisational matters. Second, there's the public-facing side — the party gets to tell voters what it stands for and get its own members fired up for the campaign ahead. The policy announcement fits that second purpose. Conferences close to an election are usually carefully planned, with major announcements timed to get the most media attention over the weekend news cycle.

The polling question

Party president Sylvia Wood has been clear about what she wants to see. At the 2024 conference, Wood said she wanted National to be polling in the mid-40s by election time — she set a goal of the mid-40s in the polls. Under New Zealand's MMP voting system, a mid-40s polling result would give National more flexibility in choosing which parties to work with after the election, rather than relying so heavily on current partners.

Whether National is actually on track to hit that target will be something people will be watching closely this weekend, even if it doesn't get said out loud.

Why Lower Hutt

The Lower Hutt Event Centre is a practical pick. It's close enough to Wellington that the Prime Minister and his ministers can easily get there, but it's also a straightforward regional hub for delegates travelling from around the country. The venue has hosted large political and civic events before.

The conference happens to be the party's 90th annual gathering — a round-number milestone. But the real weight of the weekend lies in what Luxon and his ministers actually announce, and in how Wood reads the mood of the party as it heads towards the election.
