Apple's M6 Mac mini starts at $899 with a 12-core processor and 12-core graphics. The Verge

It belongs to a Mac mini lineup with M6 and M5 Pro chips, introduced in August. The M6 has two more processor cores than before, and Apple claims "world's fastest single-threaded performance," or fast handling of single tasks. Apple

The $899 model has 16GB of shared memory, used jointly by processing and graphics, and 256GB of storage. Thurrott

The last Mac mini started at $599, so the new price is $300 higher for a lot more power. The Verge notes 12 cores may be more than web users need. The Verge

Apple also sells a $699 MacBook Neo, a laptop powered by an iPhone chip. From that, The Verge imagined a Mac Neo, a smaller fanless desktop with a phone chip at about $499. The Verge

The gap is now $200. A $699 laptop with a phone chip sits below an $899 desktop with a full Mac chip. There is no desktop for those who want macOS, a fixed desk machine, and very low heat and power use.

The broader context here is who needs extra power. Think of cores like checkout lanes. More lanes help heavy work such as building software, running AI on the device, preparing software containers, and converting video. Browsing, light office work, and watching video do not need them. A phone-chip desktop would be slower on long heavy jobs and offer fewer ports, but would be silent, use less power, and cost less to build.

In my view, the idea is less about missing the old cheap Mac than about picking the right chip for the job. Phone chips are now fast enough for smooth daily use, especially with shared memory and built-in video help. For schools, labs, kiosks, groups of simple shared computers, and families with one living-room machine, quiet and small can matter more than top scores. A $499 device would not replace the M6 mini. It would sit below it.

Looking at what this means for buyers, basic buyers must now pay for power they may never use. That tradeoff is common with recent Macs. Efficiency keeps rising, and the starting level rises with it. The hopeful side is that the same efficiency behind the $699 laptop could allow a smaller desktop, letting a Mac fit in more places rather than just making the mini faster.
