The Australian War Memorial in Canberra has opened a new arrival space called the Anzac Atrium. It is the first major piece of a much larger construction project that will take until 2028 to finish.

Here is the reason for the work. AWM records show the project started in 2020. The Memorial needed two things: repairs to the building itself, including a new roof, and more gallery space. The existing building ran out of room for the stories it wanted to tell. The main galleries were built around Australia's wars in the early 1900s and the Korean War. But Australia has been involved in many military operations since the 1990s — in Somalia, East Timor, Afghanistan, Iraq, and peacekeeping missions around the world. The current building did not have space for all these stories.

The biggest new gallery, called Anzac Hall, is being built as the main part of the project. The Memorial originally said it would be finished by Anzac Day 2026 (25 April), which is an important date for Australia. That deadline has now passed. The Memorial has not yet said when it will actually open. When Anzac Hall does open, it will display thousands of stories from these more recent conflicts and military missions.

The new Anzac Atrium that just opened works differently. Instead of showing objects and stories, it acts as a new entrance and way to move through the building. This matters more than you might think. The War Memorial is not just a museum — it is also where Australia holds important national ceremonies, like the Anzac Day dawn service, which brings tens of thousands of people each year. So construction has to happen while keeping the building open and ready for public gatherings. The team working on this has been juggling both goals since 2020.

There is one more thing to know about the project. The original Anzac Hall, built in 2001 by a well-known architect named Romaldo Giurgola, is being knocked down to make room for the new one. Some people who care about heritage and older buildings objected to losing it. But the government funded the project anyway, and it has continued under different governments. The real question will come when the new Anzac Hall opens: how well does it tell the stories of wars and conflicts that are still happening or very recent?

Right now, the new Anzac Atrium is open and working. It shows the project is moving forward. The Memorial and the government have about two more years to finish everything by 2028.
