This British heatwave is not isolated. Across Europe, temperatures approached 40°C in the week of 22 June, triggering warnings in multiple countries and causing transport delays. France recorded its hottest June day on record during this period.

The human cost appeared immediately. Around 20 people drowned in France over several days as people tried to cool off in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Most were swimming in unsupervised locations.
