The UK could see temperatures around 39°C (102°F) in June 2026 — a temperature that would shatter the previous June record of 35.6°C. The Met Office, the UK's official weather service, has issued a Red Extreme Heat Warning and says breaking the record is highly likely. Even if temperatures don't quite reach 39°C, hitting 37°C by mid-week would still set a new June benchmark.

This isn't the first time Europe has overheated this year. Back in May, an earlier heat wave brought temperatures 10 to 15°C above normal for that time of year, and it caused deaths before fading. Late May also broke the UK's records for the hottest day and night that month. What we're seeing now is effectively a second wave of extreme heat arriving after a season that already started hot.

Red weather alerts are now active across the UK, France, Spain, and Italy, according to CNBC. Parts of mainland Europe have already topped 40°C. France just recorded its hottest overnight temperature on record — something public health experts watch as closely as daytime highs. Unlike hot days that cool down at night, heat that doesn't break after sunset is what kills vulnerable people. Reuters confirms deaths have already occurred in France.

Why It's Getting So Hot

A large ocean-atmosphere pattern called El Niño is amplifying this heat. The Met Office confirmed it was underway on June 11, when water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean crossed a certain threshold. El Niño typically makes Northern Hemisphere summers hotter and drier across Europe, and it raises the chances of extreme heat almost everywhere. Think of it as a dial that turns up the heat on top of warming that's already happening from emissions into the atmosphere.

The real danger is the timing. When heat like this arrives for the first time in a summer, people haven't had time to adjust — they change how they dress, drink more water, avoid the sun during peak hours. When a second dangerous heat wave comes just weeks after the first, that adaptation window shrinks. Public health systems get less time to prepare.

What These Records Actually Mean

A June temperature of 39°C would come within 1.4°C of the UK's absolute all-time record from July 2022. That's important because engineers and hospitals plan for gradual steps up in extreme temperatures. When a June record sits almost as high as the all-time record, it means infrastructure — power grids, roads, rail networks — is being pushed harder than the systems were designed for. Many local authorities' emergency plans were built on older, cooler assumptions.

The overnight temperature record matters in a specific way. Cities like Paris and Lyon have dense urban cores where buildings absorb and hold heat, and many have older housing stock that isn't designed for extreme temperatures. In the 2003 European heat wave, France lost an estimated 15,000 people. The country built better heat response plans after that — ambulance systems on alert, community cooling centers, welfare checks on elderly residents — and they've helped in later heat events. But when you break the overnight temperature record, you're testing whether those plans can actually handle the new reality.

Italy is watching a different threshold: parts of the north and center have never recorded 40°C before. Once a number like that appears on the thermometer, it changes how people and governments think about heat — and what safety standards they enforce for outdoor work and building cooling systems.

The rest of June's forecast depends on whether the Atlantic wind patterns shift enough to push the heat dome away. Until that happens, conditions are still in place for more record-breaking.
