Why OpenAI's Big Sales Number Lifted Oracle

$70 billion a year. That is roughly the sales pace OpenAI reached on September 29, 2026.

Its annualized run rate, which takes one month of sales and multiplies by 12 like a monthly paycheck scaled to a year, neared $70 billion, Reuters reported. Sales to large companies had more than doubled since July 2026. Oracle, described as OpenAI's critical computing infrastructure partner, closed 5.3% higher that day.

Oracle reported $19.3 billion in total revenue for its fiscal first quarter, up 30% in dollars and in constant currency, which means without the effect of changing exchange rates, according to Oracle Investor Relations. Revenue from cloud infrastructure, or rented computing over the internet, rose 121% in dollars. Software revenue fell 3% to $5.5 billion. Oracle said it signed over $30 billion in AI cloud contracts in the quarter, lifting its backlog, or sold work not yet delivered, to $664 billion.

Those September numbers were different from April. On April 28, 2026, OpenAI had missed its own targets for weekly users and revenue as it worked toward an IPO, a first sale of shares to the public, the Wall Street Journal reported. Oracle shares fell 3.4% to $167.3 in morning trading that day on worries about OpenAI growth, Reuters reported.

OpenAI said it raised $122 billion to speed up the next phase of AI, OpenAI said. The company said it was making $1B per quarter by the end of 2024 and was making $2B in revenue per month. It later said it finished a recapitalization, a change to how it is owned and funded, and that its nonprofit still controls the for-profit business, OpenAI.

OpenAI said its products reach more than one billion weekly users and 2.5 million businesses. ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in less than 200 days after launch.

OpenAI's September 29 news index listed "Towards safety cases for frontier AI training" as Safety news dated Sep 28, 2026, "How we will do better for Australia" and "Lenfest grows landmark program with OpenAI support" as Company news dated Sep 28, 2026, and "Two years of OpenAI Academy" and "Sam Altman's remarks at the United Nations Security Council" dated Sep 23, 2026. Oracle said it had delivered 75% of total capacity as of September 2026, with the rest coming in later quarters. Its newsroom listed "Oracle Extends Fusion Agentic Applications with Introduction of Fusion Claw.", "Oracle Health Advances Revenue Cycle Management with AI.", "Oracle to Advance Cancer Care with New Oncology EHR." and "Real-World Data and AI Capabilities in Oracle Life Sciences Data Intelligence Help Accelerate Clinical Research and Commercialization." Oracle said its AI World event will return to Las Vegas on October 25-28, 2026, with SuiteWorld in Las Vegas on October 25-28.

The broader context here is timing, and it matters if you save or invest. The $70 billion pace is today's sales stretched to a year. The $664 billion backlog is orders Oracle still has to build and deliver. Oracle's fast-growing data center side is now carrying growth, while its older software side shrank.

In my view, the key link for specialists is between the two firms. Oracle's new orders and share price move with how much OpenAI uses. The April miss showed users and sales can fall short even while Oracle builds. Watch how fast orders turn into sales, whether business sales keep growing after July, and whether ads add income without cutting profit on each AI answer.
