Want a PS5 Pro in Japan? You Will Need 60 Hours of Playtime

Sony Japan will only sell the PS5 Pro to shoppers in Japan who meet three rules together. You must play on a Sony account registered in Japan, you must use that same account to buy the console, and you must have played at least 60 hours on PS5 or PS4 between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026. Requests to buy open on October 7. Approved shoppers can buy from October 26 to November 2. If more people apply than there are consoles, Sony will pick buyers by lottery, a random draw like a raffle for tickets. Engadget

Winners will be told one by one starting around October 26 by email. If you linked your Sony account to LINE, the chat app widely used in Japan, you will also get a message there. Stock is low. The PS5 Pro has been out of stock at major U.S. stores, and Sony expects parts shortages to limit supply through early 2027. Engadget

The system uses information Sony already has. Playtime is already counted for each account on PS4 and PS5. Each account is already marked with its region. By linking the two, Sony makes it hard to qualify with a brand-new account or an account from another country. The 60-hour rule checks real past use, not just a receipt.

Sony has run strict sales like this in Japan before. PlayStation Japan shared details of the PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited model on September 30, 2024, with Sony Interactive Entertainment taking applications and telling winners of the draw. The PS5 already plays more than 8,500 PS4 games. Buyers can choose a model with a disc drive for physical discs or a digital-only model. Supported games can run at 120fps for very smooth motion and can use ray tracing for more lifelike shadows and reflections.

The broader context here is that Sony is giving up open sales to share limited stock more carefully. A plain draw is random. A draw limited to local accounts with proven playtime first narrows the entrants to active local players. That makes it harder to create many fake accounts or buy consoles just to resell them, without lines at stores or manual checks. The downside is that some real players will miss out. New players, returning players under 60 hours, and families sharing one login will not qualify even if they would use the machine.

In my view, that tradeoff is easier to understand when stock cannot be fixed fast. If shortages last into early 2027, every console Sony ships will sell. The job is then sharing fairly, not finding buyers. It is similar to how online services share limited computer capacity. Regular users get served first and others wait, using usage records already on file.

Looking to the longer term, in my view, this points to hardware tied more closely to your account history. I have watched my own children move from discs to downloads to subscriptions without thinking about the systems behind it. They only notice when they are blocked. A 60-hour rule is invisible to a regular player and a hard wall for everyone else. That is why it works, and why people will debate it.
