Base44 Built Its Own AI Brain After Wix Bought It for $80 Million

Base44, a platform that helps people build software using plain English instructions, has finished building its own artificial intelligence model. The company put the model — called Base-1 — into live use in late June 2026. According to Wix's announcement, Base44 is the first app-building platform to run on a custom-made AI model built just for this purpose.

The timing tells a story. Wix bought Base44 in June 2025 for $80 million, saying it wanted to expand into app creation — specifically, the ability to build software from natural-language descriptions. Within about a year, Base44's team went from using other companies' AI models to running their own.

Why Building Your Own Model Matters

Most no-code and low-code platforms — that's the industry name for tools that let non-programmers build apps — rent their AI from the big players. They use OpenAI's GPT-4o, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, or similar models, and then build user-friendly interfaces on top. Building your own model is different. For an app-building platform, those choices matter. The platform will accept new users coming through ChatGPT, but it can also serve them using its own infrastructure once they sign up.
