A Fusion Company Just Generated Electricity From Plasma—Here's Why It Matters

A company called Realta Fusion has done something that has never been done before: converted energy from plasma directly into electricity, according to an announcement on 30 June 2026. Plasma is superheated matter—imagine the interior of the Sun—and capturing electricity from it is a major step toward making fusion power a practical energy source.
Realta used a device called WHAM to achieve this. WHAM is an experimental fusion reactor located in Wisconsin, upgraded with powerful electromagnets and better plasma heating technology. The company installed a converter that takes the energy from fusion reactions and turns it into electricity.
Understanding the difference between how Realta does this and how most power plants work is important. Most power plants—whether coal, natural gas, or fission nuclear—use heat. They boil water, which creates steam that spins a turbine, which generates electricity. It is a familiar, proven method. Realta's approach skips this entire process. Instead of using heat, it directly captures the energy of the particles created by fusion and converts them into electricity. In theory, this direct approach can be much more efficient because it avoids the energy loss that happens when you convert heat to steam to motion.
Fusion is attractive to investors and researchers for another reason. Unlike nuclear fission reactors, fusion reactors would not produce long-lived radioactive waste — the hazardous material that stays dangerous for thousands of years. Fusion's fuel comes from hydrogen, which is abundant. For these reasons, companies keep pursuing fusion even though commercial fusion power plants do not yet exist.
Realta has partnered with another fusion company called Commonwealth Fusion Systems. That partnership gives Realta access to some of the most advanced electromagnets built specifically for fusion work. These electromagnets use special materials that work at extremely cold temperatures and can generate very strong magnetic fields.
Realta's achievement does not mean we will have fusion power plants in homes next year. The company has demonstrated that direct conversion is possible at small scale in a laboratory setting. The real challenge ahead is proving that this approach works reliably, consistently, and at the larger scales needed to power cities and grids. The fusion industry has a history of overestimating how quickly research can turn into practical power stations—a fact worth keeping in mind.
But here is the genuine progress: a company has now run electricity through a converter powered by a fusion reactor. That capability did not exist before 30 June 2026.
