Prices Likely Rose Again in September: What to Watch on Wednesday Morning

September price data lands at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026. Forecasters expect prices to have risen faster.
CPI means Consumer Price Index. Think of it as the government's monthly shopping list for tracking inflation, or how fast prices are rising. Economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal expected a 0.6% rise for September, up from 0.4% in August. That would leave prices 3.6% higher than a year ago. Wall Street Journal The time is listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Market traders expected the same yearly number. They saw September prices up 3.6% from a year earlier, versus 3.4% in August, according to CNBC. That is faster on both the monthly and yearly counts.
Gold and silver slipped before the report. Comex gold settled 0.31% lower at $4152.90, while Comex silver settled 1.63% lower at $59.161. Wall Street Journal Both metals were lower heading into the numbers.
More data comes right after. September CPI was set for Wednesday in the week of Oct. 12-16, 2026, with retail sales and PPI set for a day later. Investing.com PPI tracks prices businesses pay. Retail sales tracks shopper spending. The October CPI is set for Nov. 10, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.
Borrowing costs were already rising. A Treasury yield is the yearly return for lending to the U.S. government. When yields rise, loans and credit tend to cost more. Wall Street closed lower on Oct. 7, 2026 as long-term Treasury yields climbed again. Reuters In early September, yields hit their highest since 2023 and the S&P 500 fell 0.58%. The S&P was still up 11% for 2026 at that point. Reuters
July showed what can happen on CPI day. Stocks finished mixed and bond yields edged lower after July prices came in up 3.4%. Wall Street Journal Around the July 29, 2026 Fed meeting, Treasury yields rose 25 to 30 basis points on higher real rates, the Fed minutes state. A basis point is 0.01 point. Real rates mean rates after inflation. Federal Reserve
The Fed calendar moves fast next. The FOMC, the Fed group that sets rates, met Sept. 15-16, 2026. The Fed put out minutes of that meeting on Oct. 7, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The next meeting after September would be Oct. 27-28, 2026, the minutes state. Federal Reserve The Fed also set the December meeting for Dec. 8-9, 2026. Federal Reserve BofA Global Research expected three 0.25-point rate hikes in 2026, starting in September. BofA Private Bank
The broader context here is what led the rise in yields. A drop in bond prices led by real rates, not by higher inflation fears, still tightens money through borrowing costs and stock prices. That split matters for the Oct. 27-28 meeting. A 0.6% monthly rise with 3.6% for the year would keep price speed high going into PPI and retail sales the next day, giving the Fed fresh reads on prices and shopper strength together.
In my view, rates are the main channel into Oct. 14. The September stretch showed stocks can hold a double-digit gain for the year yet still wobble when long-term yields jump. Soft gold and silver before the report point to little hedging for a hot surprise and more focus on the rate path. If September matches the 3.6% forecast, the question turns from whether price drops stalled to how the Fed words October and guides for December, with three meetings left in the year-end run.
