Banks Had a Mixed Day, But Stocks Still Hit New Highs

Citigroup shared its third-quarter 2026 results on October 13, 2026, according to its investor relations page Citigroup. JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs reported the same Tuesday. CNBC called that bank batch mixed in its October 13 live updates CNBC.
U.S. stocks still ended higher that Tuesday as oil prices steadied and government borrowing costs eased Reuters. A Treasury yield is the interest the government pays to borrow. When it eases, loans can get cheaper. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs Tuesday, according to the same Reuters reporting.
Monday was weaker. The Nasdaq closed lower Monday after oil jumped nearly $2 a barrel following attacks on a Saudi airport Reuters. Stock futures were quiet ahead of earnings. Then crude steadied Tuesday. Yields eased Tuesday.
The record hides a weak base. Over 200 S&P 500 companies were down in 2026, with 4 in 10 S&P stocks down this year, according to Reuters analysis published October 12 Reuters. Think of a class average lifted by a few top scores while many scores fall.
Watchers focused on four big banks. A Zacks preview covering JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and Bank of America was dated Oct. 14, 2026, 7:00 AM EDT Yahoo Finance. What those banks earn from loans, fees and loan losses is used to guess how other banks will do.
The broader context here is narrow strength. Mixed bank news did not stop new highs. For savers and borrowers, the headline can look better than what most stocks do. Bank health still feeds through in bad loans and payouts to shareholders.
In my view, the two-day oil story matters more for markets than for banks alone. A near-$2 jump tied to supply risk, then steadier oil and lower yields with records, fits worry about supply that stayed contained. Stocks shook off Monday.
Looking at what this means for the rest of earnings season, narrow gains leave little cushion. Records built when 4 in 10 names are down depend more on a few leaders and what bellwethers say next about profits and reserves. Mixed results plus new highs do not settle that tension. They show it.
