Big Banks Had a Bumpy Week. Here's What It Means for You

JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup reported third-quarter 2026 earnings on Oct. 13 with mixed results. CNBC Bank of America reported a 17% fall in third-quarter 2026 profit. Yahoo Finance
Before those reports, analysts expected earnings for the largest U.S. banks to rise up to 20% from a year earlier. Reuters
The broader context here is that 20% is a high bar. One weak part of the business can cancel out a good part somewhere else.

The S&P 500, a list of 500 large U.S. companies used to judge the stock market, was up 14% in 2026 as of October 13. That gain was lifted by AI-related technology stocks. Reuters The middle stock in that list was up less than 5% over the same period. Reuters
What matters for your money here is that banks felt that split. When only a few tech stocks drive most gains, banks depend more on work with big investors, like trading and helping companies do deals.
Wall Street banks said on October 13, 2026 that deals had slowed on market jitters but the pipeline remained strong. Reuters Think of the pipeline like food orders taken but not yet served. The work is lined up, but the banks have not been paid yet.
The IMF cited an AI slowdown and spiking yields as looming global market risks in October 2026. Yields are the interest investors demand to hold bonds. When they spike, borrowing gets more costly. Reuters The same assessment said its stress-test models showed banks' capital cushions remained robust even in a hypothetical downturn triggered by an AI slowdown. A capital cushion is extra money set aside to absorb losses, like a spare tire. Reuters The Bank of Japan said in early October 2026 that the AI boom may have eased financial conditions while warning of market risks. In my view, promised work is not the same as paid work. A strong pipeline does not lock in fees or protect against loans going bad. The test is whether deals actually close, and whether banks can handle losses if high borrowing costs, falling tech prices and stalled deals hit at once.
The broader context here is what to watch next. If market nerves calm, delayed deals can close and results can even out. If borrowing costs stay jumpy and tech stocks wobble, banks tied to daily trading and banks tied to closing deals could see very different results. Extra capital gives banks time to wait. It does not set the price of risk.
