Do Bumblebees Have Feelings? Scientists Find They React to Taste Like We Do

Bumblebees make distinct facial expressions when they taste sweet or bitter things — and those expressions look a lot like emotional responses in mammals, including humans. A new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences documents this behavior in detail.
Researchers from Macquarie University in Australia and Southern Medical University in China filmed bumblebees tasting different liquids: sugar solutions, plain water, salt water, and quinine (a bitter compound). Using slow-motion video, they noticed that after tasting something sweet, bees stuck out their mouthparts and kept licking. When they tasted salt or quinine, they shook their heads and wiped their mouths — the insect version of "yuck." These reactions look similar to how mammals show they like or dislike something, per The Guardian.
The big question was simple: Are these just automatic reactions, like your hand jerking away from a hot stove? Or is something more going on?
To find out, the researchers tested bees under different conditions: some exposed to heat stress, some that were hungry or full, and some given different drugs. The crucial discovery came when they heated the bees. When bees were hot, something interesting happened: they started enjoying water and mild salt that they had previously disliked. This context-dependence — where the bee's inner state changes how it feels about something — is the key sign that actual preference may be involved, not just automatic reflex.
One of the study's authors, Professor Andrew Barron, summed it up this way: "It tells us there is an inner life to the insect."
Why This Matters
How we classify animal responses has real-world consequences. Right now, laws and ethical guidelines treat automatic reflexes very differently from genuine feelings. When regulators ask whether animals deserve welfare protections, the central question is: Does the animal actually suffer, or is it just reacting like a robot?
Most past research on insect welfare has looked at pain and fear. This study is significant because it focuses on something simpler and more basic: pleasure. That makes the findings harder to dismiss as pure mechanics.
There is an important caveat. Mammals' taste-preference behavior happens in specific brain regions that bees don't have. The researchers are not claiming that bees have the same brain system as us — just that the overall pattern of their behavior is similar. It is like two different machines producing the same end result. Critics rightly ask: Does similarity in behavior prove similarity in experience? That remains an open question.
What Happens Next
The study does not prove that bumblebees feel emotions in the way we understand them. The authors are clear about that. But it does make future research possible. If an animal with roughly one million neurons — compared to the 86 billion in a human brain — can show this kind of taste-based preference, scientists now have better tools to study what might be happening inside insect heads.
Practically, this matters for bumblebee farming. Thousands of bumblebee colonies are used by greenhouses to pollinate crops. If these findings hold up, regulations about how those colonies are transported, what pesticides they are exposed to, and how they are raised may need to change.
The deeper implication is evolutionary. Bees and mammals last shared a common ancestor about 600 million years ago. If both ended up with similar taste-preference systems, that suggests something important: either animals face strong evolutionary pressure to develop something like emotions, or the capacity for preference is much older and more common in nature than we thought.
